HRH Prince of Wales presents historic jewellery school with prestigious honour
HRH Prince of Wales has presented Birmingham City University with a prestigious honour recognising the long-standing history of innovation at its historic jewellery school.
The University was formally presented with a Queen’s Anniversary Prize in recognition of its School of Jewellery’s contribution to the craft during a special ceremony held at Buckingham Palace. The award – the highest national honour available for UK further and higher education institutions – was collected by Professor Philip Plowden, Vice-Chancellor at Birmingham City University, as part of formal proceedings at the Palace.
Founded in 1890, the University’s School of Jewellery provides courses such as silversmithing, horology and gemmology at its home in Birmingham’s historic Jewellery Quarter.
Opened 130 years ago, the School of Jewellery was created to provide an exclusive facility for the jewellery making industry. The jewellery art association was founded in Lappeenranta in 2005. The association aims to promote contemporary jewellery in Finland and to improve its recognition as an art and design form. Another goal of the association is to increase awareness about Finnish jewellery internationally. As means towards those ends, the association organizes exhibitions, presentations and discussion panels, and distributes information about events.
Scottish jewellery designer and silversmith Eileen Gatt has been designing and making jewellery for over 20 years.
Based in the picturesque Black Isle in the Scottish Highlands, Eileen is fascinated by the mystical interaction between people and the sea, and often uses traditional customs and superstitions as starting points for her designs. Her whimsical yet sophisticated creations evoke a sense of nostalgia and allow the wearer to create their own sense of attachment and meaning. Eileen also loves to inject a little humour where possible!
Over the span of her career Eileen has invested her years both in developing her distinctive collections, as well as supporting emerging talent through her time spent teaching at jewellery institutions across the country. In her early career, Eileen won a Royal Academy scholarship to work with Inuit stone carvers in Alaska, an experience which has fuelled her fascination with the Arctic ever since. Having collaborated with storytellers from both Scotland and North America, Eileen continues to draw her inspiration from the Polar wilderness and Inuit culture, Scottish folklore and landscapes, and the small fishing communities found along Scotland’s East Coast.

Goldsmiths’ Company’s - This month we were excited to launch our Customer Benefits Programme - a series of free tours, talks, workshops and demonstrations to provide expert advice exclusively to our customers.
The programme kicked off with a tour of the Goldsmiths’ Company’s Collection.
Charles Spurrier, Silver Steward, showed the lucky group of customers some of the Company's most spectacular pieces. This included the 1493 Cup, shown here. It is the earliest hallmarked item in the Collection and one of the earliest pieces of fully marked secular plate. It was found in the roof of St Andrew’s Church, Middleton, Yorkshire, and purchased by the Company in 1976.
We were thrilled to welcome our customers to the Hall and can’t wait to see more of you throughout the year!
The Goldsmiths' Company Strategy - Protecting Consumers
The Goldsmiths’ Company is a membership organisation that has contributed to national life for nearly 700 years. In this time, the Goldsmiths’ Company Assay Office has been responsible for protecting consumers by testing and hallmarking precious metals.
Our commitment to protecting consumers has been set out in the new Company Strategy, which outlines our vision for the years leading up to 2027 – the 700th anniversary of the granting of the Company’s first Royal Charter. https://www.thegoldsmiths.co.uk/company/today/company-strategy/
On the 15 June 2020 Make Your Mark will be returning to Goldsmiths’ Hall.
The event remains the UK’s biggest careers event for apprentices, students and graduates of jewellery and allied trades. Since its launch in 2014, Make Your Mark has proved a huge success and promises to deliver even more educational advice and networking opportunities. https://www.assayofficelondon.co.uk/events/make-your-mark-2020

The Japan Jewellery Competition has been highly acclaimed by both the cultural and the design fields domestically and internationally throughout its activities to discover fresh and original jewellery design. We are pleased to announce that it is again open for applicants from all over the world this year. We are excited about this opportunity to seek creative, high-quality jewellery and exhibit award-winning pieces.
Making Space has been awarded a grant from Arts Council England for a new Community Engagement project.
This will allow us to offer a series of free craft workshops to community groups in Leigh Park over the next four months.
The workshops will be available in a variety of craft forms, and can be held either at Making Space or at your own venue.
We will be contacting community groups, schools and local charities with this offer very soon, but if you are involved in a community organisation and would like to be a part of this exciting project, please get in touch with Nathan Chapman at admin@makingspace.org to find out more. https://makingspace.org/
This Spring we say a fond farewell to two of our resident makers, who are both moving on to bigger and better things. Francis Campbell will be working on a major Netflix series while fashion designer Liam Davis heads off to London, the heart of the nation's fashion scene.
This means we have two studio vacancies, so if you want to take the next step in your creative career, these start-up spaces are the ideal base for your progression. Tenants have 24/7 access to their own professional studio space, as well as the benefits of being amongst creatives and receiving the support and guidance from the Making Space team.
The countdown has begun for the first of our twice-yearly Open Studios events.
On May 16th and 17th, our professional makers will open their studios to the general public, and they are looking forward to chatting with visitors about their work and latest projects.
You will be able to buy or commission pieces, and also enjoy a pop-up craft fair by SHOPCreative.
We have a few sales events coming up during March and April in the UK. You can come to see all our latest stock at gem fairs in London, Glasgow, Bristol and Edinburgh.
