Year-end donation ask time, oh, how I dread thee - and I know I am not alone. Do you, like me, think you should donate but then oftentimes don’t go through with it because you are (a) not rich enough to support every worthy cause and (b) worried that your comparatively tiny donation probably won’t matter anyway? For instance, do you enjoy what SNAG has to offer and know they really need the money, but ....

Well, to cut this short, this year I decided to buckle down and donate to SNAG! I can’t give thousands of dollars but I know that even my few bucks will count, will be noticed, will be effective and will support something that is really important to you and me: our community of fellow metalsmiths and the message that needs to get out there that what we do is great. I mean, really, what is more important than jewelry and metals? Anyone?

So, can I ask you to send in a donation as well, please? Absolutely every amount counts and is noticed. Can you do it now? It rally takes just 10 seconds of your time. Here is the link:

    Thank you very much!

PS: Money is what keeps things afloat. It’s really that simple. Your contribution and your involvement matter very much, particularly to a small arts organization like SNAG. Thank you again!

    Call for Entry.

Faktura: ORIGIN Russian Constructivism, is the visual demonstration of properties inherent to materials

Faktura is a juried exhibition of jewelry and objects. Winthrop University and the Guild of Emerging Metalsmiths (GEM) invite all students, currently enrolled in a college/university-level metals, jewelry or designed objects program, to enter jewelry and designed objects that relate to this theme. This call for entries will reexamine the concept of faktura in this context. Objects submitted for consideration should hold a truth to materials that may be evident in the physical properties, history, origin, and/or sourcing of the materials that are used to create the work. Works for the exhibition will be selected by Susie Ganch, associate professor/metal area lead, Department of Craft and Material Studies, Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts. Faktura is made possible in part by Winthrop University jewelry and metals students and faculty, in partnership with the Winthrop University Galleries, the Guild of Emerging Metalsmiths (GEM), and Department of Fine Arts.

SNAG update: Effective immediately the Maker Profile Pages are now a FREE member benefit, no longer a $25 add-on to the SNAG membership. The launch of these pages has been so well received that the board wants to eliminate anything that stands in the way of all members, including student members, creating their own Maker Profile on the website. Thank you to the early adopters who have made these pages so successful as a promotional tool for individuals, the organization and the field!

This is SNAG's second virtual exhibition (Submission deadline is May 31), juried by master goldsmiths George Sawyer, Judith Kinghorn, and Tom Herman. Read the Jurors Statement (attached), and begin thinking about the pieces you will submit. We are looking for high-quality images of exemplary work by contemporary, traditional goldsmiths. We welcome one-of-a-kind jewelry and objects created from precious metals. Of added interest are designs and processes implemented in response to the rising cost of materials. John Paul Miller. RIP.
Born in 1918 in Huntington, Pennsylvania. John Paul Miller revived the ancient technique of “granulation” — embellishing a gold surface with infinitesimal spheres of gold — and brought it to the highest degree of refinement in his work, which draws much of its inspiration from crustacean and other animal forms. He taught for 37 years at the Cleveland Institute of Art and received the American Craft Council’s Gold Medal in 1994.

Important SNAG update re bringing work into Canada for the conference:

We understand the frustrations you are feeling trying to sort through the complex issues of duty and customs. We have been in contact with a Canadian Border Patrol agent who has outlined steps that you should follow to legally bring your Trunk Show work for sale into Canada. She said:

Both US & Canadian customs officers recommended you take photos of your jewelry, preferably next to something showing a date before you leave (such as a newspaper). This includes work to be sold at the trunk show, pins for the pin swap and even personal jewelry.
If you are stopped and questioned, there is the chance that the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA) can and will charge you a 5% Goods & Services Tax (GST) on items brought into the country. Upon departure from Canada the CBSA office, at either the airport or border if driving, can refund the tax you paid with proof that you came into Canada with those goods.

For those participating in the Trunk Show, you are importing work for sale and are therefore eligible to be taxed.
Any items not sold are eligible for a tax refund (see above)
Here is the information and forms you will need to fill out

    1. Call 519-252-4705 to receive an importing account number (free of charge)

2. Go to cbsa.gc.ca, click on "publications & forms", then click on forms and open up form B3-3 http://www.cbsa.gc.ca/publications/forms-formulaires/b3-3-eng.html
    3. All items must be itemized on this form. The value is on the materials, not labor. This is what you are taxed on.

4. This form is presented at customs when entering Canada when (and if) asked for it.

    5. In there is booklet number BSF5079. http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/publications/pub/bsf5079-eng.html
This gives all the directions on procedures and rules for importing and selling goods.

US citizens have an $800 exemption and therefore would not be charged any duty on the pins as long as you declare the merchandise and anything else you might purchase at the conference.
Make sure you keep your photo documents to prove you left the US with those items.
Not declaring and getting caught can result in loss of merchandise and a fine.

We apologize that this turned out to be far more complicated and expensive than any of us could have imagined. For those American participants who would prefer to not continue their participation in this year’s event, we will refund your $100 “show up fee” so long as you let us know by this Friday, May 10, at noon Pacific Time. If we haven’t heard from you by this deadline, we will assume you are continuing as an exhibitor. If you decide Toronto’s not for you, we sincerely hope you will consider participating in future Trunk Show events.

Hello Everyone! My name is Renee Zettle-Sterling and this is my first letter, of many, to you as president. I would like to start off my first letter by taking a moment to thank a very extraordinary individual in our lives, Dana Singer. Dana will be leaving SNAG this October and she will be deeply missed. Dana was SNAG’s first professional Executive Director and she helped lead SNAG into a new era as an organization. She has been SNAG’s cornerstone for more than fourteen years, making many considerable and generous contributions to this organization by providing vision and much-needed continuity of leadership.

While it is hard to imagine SNAG without Dana, the Board and I believe this will also be an exciting time. It is an opportunity for us to usher SNAG into a whole new era, with different ideas and perspectives. We are currently beginning the search for the new Executive Director, and I have organized a search committee comprised of member-at-large Christine Bossler, ACC Executive Director Chris Amundsen, and Executive Committee members Sue Amendolara, Anne Havel, and me. The posting for the position opens on June 18th and will close July 18th. Based on our timeline we are hoping to have a new ED in place in September.

    “Message: Beyond Adornment”

    info@jsnfarnham.com http://jewellersandsilversmiths.wordpress.com/
    PRESS RELEASE
Exhibition Announcement and Call for Your Readers Help and Participation

The Farnham based Jewellers and Silversmiths Network (JSN) have challenged themselves to design, make and exhibit a collection of works in response to the theme of:
    “Message: Beyond Adornment”
The members of the JSN will be exploring creative boundaries and interpreting the theme in its broadest sense developing ideas including environmental, philosophical, social and personal in a variety of media.
The exhibition will run from 27th April 2014 – 7th June 2014 at The New Ashgate Gallery, Waggon Yard, Farnham, Surrey GU9 7PS

THE JSN NEEDS YOU AND YOUR READERS TO PARTICIPATE
One of the displays will be a collection of work sent in by anyone who would like to join in be they professional, or amateur, young
or old. It will look at how we can try to take control of images of ourselves, a topical theme given the prevalence of social media sites and the speed with which our image can be spread across the internet
JSN Member Poppy Porter says; “ we are keen to involve as wide an audience as possible with this exhibition and engage with people beyond a passive viewing experience. Get involved make a necklace.”
THE BRIEF: Design and make a piece of revisable neckwear that says “I Agree” on one side and “I Disagree” on the other. This allows the wearer to physically attempt to send a message about whether they want their photo taken or not. “I Agree” and “I Disagree” is the terminology commonly used in computer software user agreements. You can use any materials you like in any style. There is only one proviso – it is a swap, you will not get your own necklace back but you will get someone else’s. Do not use precious materials unless you are willing to give them away – if you make a necklace out of diamonds be aware you may get one back made out of wool.
Submissions must be received by March 24th 2014
Send to : Rebecca Skeels, Jewellery and Metalwork, University for the Creative Arts, Falkner Road, Farnham, Surrey GU9 7DS
Including an SAE with postage to cover the return of a necklace.
    NOTES TO EDITOR:
    • "The Jewellers and Silversmiths Network is a group run by and for its members with the aim of strengthening links with other makers in the local area around Farnham, Surrey. We meet regularly at the Maltings, Farnham to exchange useful information and explore new skills. We also exhibit together as a group, presenting our work to as wide a range of people as possible. As members of the group, we are able to take advantage of, and create, collaborative opportunities that would not be available to us as individuals."

     "Show us your hammer!"

We are continuing the "I am SNAG" campaign this fall, but with a twist...This year's "I am SNAG" campaign will take it's inspiration from the hammers that most every SNAG member uses, although in a variety of ways. From a tiny riveting hammer to a 10 lb sledgehammer, we are interested in reflecting the diversity of our members, the work they make and the tools they use.  Emphasize what makes you YOU in the photo - shoot in your studio at your bench, at the anvil, pose with your hammer, etc... Have fun with it! If you want to do it with a friend who's a SNAG member, feel free!
Please send images of you and your hammer to use for our upcoming fall video campaign.
The videos we are making will invigorate our membership, attract new members, as well as, help us to raise funds to bring you the programming you love.

8:30-9:30 a.m. – Lynn Batchelder, Sooyeon Kim and Laura Wood
SNAG Emerging Artists: Lynn Batchelder, Sooyeon Kim and Laura Wood – These three artists speak about the design and development of their innovative jewelry. (Batchelder and Kim are represented by Charon Kransen Arts; Wood is represented by Donna Schneier Fine Arts)

    9:30-10:30 a.m. – Jamie Bennett
Jamie Bennett: Drawing and Making – Rather than serving as renderings of his jewelry, Bennett’s drawings represent fragments of ideas and images that instigate new pieces. The relationship of these separate creative endeavors will be explored in this lecture. (Represented by Galerie Noel Guyomarc’h)

    10:30-11:30 a.m. – Donald Friedlich
Donald Friedlich: Things that Make my Heart Beat Faster – Friedlich discusses the development of his innovative glass and gold jewelry, as well as sources that have inspired him over a 40-year career. (Represented by Hedone Gallery)

    11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. – John Iversen
John Iversen in conversation with Toni Greenbaum: Other Fancy Stuff - Jeweler John Iversen and art historian Toni Greenbaum will discuss Iversen’s unique ability to make pieces praised equally by the “art,” “craft,” and “fine” jewelry communities. (Represented by Hedone Gallery)

Thanks to Don Friedlich for organizing the SNAG lectures!

    Melissa Cameron goes to SNAGneXt:
"At the modified and re-branded SNAG conference this year I'm very pleased to have been invited to speak in the SNAGspark portion of the program, where I will be giving a presentation entitled 'Holistic Thinking: Interconnection in Jewels and Practice.' There, among a few other things, I'll share my "tips for maintaining a sustainable creative practice, gleaned from sources near and far." The basic premise of my talk is that I get around, and in all the places I go, I've noticed a few common threads that help make for robust communities (first hint) and economically sustainable jewellery practices."

I was told today that I should be doing a better job THANKING my people for all their hard work. I thought I was usually pretty good at this, but maybe I need to up my efforts at this critical juncture. So here it is:
To Gwynne Rukenbrod Smith- the BESTEST Executive Director I could wish for. To Alaina Clarke the BESTEST Program Director I could wish for. To Tara Jeklin, the BESTEST office manager I could wish for. To Emma Zanetti who is new on our staff and already shows great promise to be the BESTEST too: I know you guys are (currently) working your butts off, doing double shifts, running around crossing the t's and making sure things will run as smoothly as they can at the conference next week. You are doing waayyyy more than your job description tells you to, especially Gwynne taking over a motherload of things that would otherwise fall down the drain.

Unless you, dear reader, have been on our board or on one of our committees, you really have no idea what is involved in making a big conference like a SNAG conference successful, trying to juggle all the balls, make everyone happy and keeping the big picture in mind as well. It is a gargantuan task and as a bonus everyone's a critic of your efforts. No good deed goes unpunished.

I want you and everyone reading this to know that I am very grateful and thankful to have GREAT staff. Please be nice to them and when you see them at the conference, say THANK YOU. It would mean so much.

    Pass It On

One can never have too many tools, right? True, but sometimes tools and materials collect dust in our shops and take up space, mental and otherwise. The necessity of the tool and its purpose may have long passed as our work evolved. Now along comes a bright-eyed metalsmith, fresh in the field, who could actually use that hammer, that shear, that thingy you have and create something new and great with it. Why not donate your whatchamacallit to SNAG’s Tool In The Hat project? Get rid of some clutter and do something that will enrich others in our SNAG community and do some good for our field.

To give a tool, simply sign up during conference registration or email Dianne deBeixedon at ddebeixe@odu.edu. Then drop your item at our conference desk. It’s easy.

We are looking for old tools, metal bits, old books that still have function, unusual materials such as plastics or wood. Odds and ends, basically anything gently used or new that could be of interest to someone else. Let’s see what you got. Thanks for doing this!
