ARTIST STATEMENT

As I work my way through constant sensory overload, my enameling and metalsmithing pursuits explore ideas relevant to current brain-dominating subject matter. Frequent mind disturbances include nuclear power, planet degradation, imaginary space objects and creatures, molecular & cellular structures, mathematical pursuits, and all of their inter-connectedness. As a general rule, I am attempting t0 resolve the battle for brain dominance between chaos and geometry, expressing inner turbulence through abstract or geometric drawings.

Seeking to bear witness to a world scarred and degraded by abuses both vast and negligible, i invite the viewer into a space of speculation and hopefully, discussion. Perhaps from a very simplistic view, the world seems to boil down to a few “roots of all evil” and yet, in its own majesty, it is built on very sound mathematical principles. My work is a constant expression of how these “trouble spots” intertwine with all the beauty that geometry offers our planetary existence.

Thanks for your comments. i tend to go for work that is cool and minimal or, like yours, better at being lively, gestural and colourful. Col

Your work is so beautiful. Where in VT are you? Do you show in Boston?
  • Leisa Rich

Thanks! Your work is fabulous - especially the rings! They look like some of my sculptural work!
  • Leslie A. Schug

    Hi Anne,

Thanks for friending me! I really like the richness of your enamel work :)

Unfortunately I'm not attending the SNAG conference this year but I hope to go to Arrowmont in September for the Enamelist Society conference. Will you be there?

    Leslie

  • Leslie A. Schug

I hope we can both make it to Arrowmont and get together! Enjoy yourself at the SNAG conference (would love to see Seattle but not this time)!!

  • Catherine Witherell

Hi Anne,  I think Harriete means a place online because we in California are probably not going to get to the craft shows you go to in the east so we don't get a chance to view and purchase your work - which is amazing I have to say.  There are a lot of places to sell online and Etsy is only one of them.  I would try to find a high end online store/venue to list your pieces so that when you aren't doing a show, there's a place for you to make them available.  Harriete uses "Etsy" (not very high end but there are some very accomplished artists selling there) and also a place called "ObjectFetish" here:  http://www.objectfetish.com/jewelry/index.php

FYI, they do have fees attached to them.  Etsy is about 4% and if a person used Paypal too that's another 4% but much lower than gallery fees and all the current work can be shown while galleries don't really do that.  I only really know about Etsy's fees right now.

Another idea is to have a simple personal website with a shopping cart powered by some server like "bigcartel" here:  http://bigcartel.com/       or another I've heard of called "zen cart" here:  http://www.zen-cart.com/        Some of them are free but of course they have a learning curve and might take a little time to set up.  It's possible the zen cart is easier than most and they have tutorials about how to set up shop.  I hope that helps.

Oh yeah, some people here have their etsy shop banner/badge posted on their crafthaus page and that would be the way you could get some action too.

  • Catherine Witherell

I understand.  I have been on etsy and have sold 46 things in about 4 years.  I sell more in other ways and I don't do many shows.  I agree about the best sales there being price related and that's why I think it isn't very high end.  Good to know about you sending photos of what you have on hand, maybe you could put "available" and the "price" in your item description on each photo here or the note on a widget at the top of your page that mentions how you deal with it . . . because that link up there to your website doesn't go anywhere and maybe that's all that needs to be done and what Harriete was writing about.

I believe this is your year!  Rah!

Wild and surprising color, light-hearted, yet elegant patterns and forms.

Anne, you did everything right with regard to the comment onto Maureen's page. Some crafthausers want to approve comments they receive before they allow them posted onto their pages, it has nothing to do with me :-)) Maureen will approve the comment probably as soon as she gets it emailed.

  • Margaret Henkels

I particularly like the floral pieces that are very three dimensional. All your work is vibrant and energetic, but those just burst with life.
  • Jill Baker Gower

Congrats on becoming treasurer of SNAG!

  • Tara J. Brannigan

Heya Anne!  Thanks for the add and for the comment on my barnacle brooch!  I'm actually working on a larger piece along a similar theme right now.

Love the color in your pieces, particularly in "prison cell series: it's all perspective".  Great work!

  • Mara Krumins

Thanks for the comment!  I am also a big fan of your work.  I was originally a metalsmith and can truly appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into your pieces - absolutely beautiful!

  • Mara Krumins

I haven't totally abandoned metalsmithing, but I was just diagnosed with a life-altering illness that doesn't allow me to use my hands in the same way.  I have always done work with paper and 2-D mixed media pieces and right now that is still feasible.  However, I would like to explore some other materials as well.  I guess we'll see what happens.

  • The Justified Sinner

Thanks for the kind comments. It is always lovely to see work so very different from my own. I almost never use enamels as I don't have the skill-set or the patience and what you are doing is quite unique.

  • The Justified Sinner

Well, Anne, it is always good to be able to know that you are doing something interesting and different, as you are. It doesn't matter if you don't have the skills to do everything that everyone else (on Crafthaus) can do; neither do I! (Especially enamelling.)

  • Brigitte Martin

Thank you very much for your membership payment and support of crafthaus. Your membership is valid through Oct 15, 2013.

    Enjoy crafthaus, participate often !!
  • Kat Cole

Anne, Your enamels are looking great!  I am doing well down here, in my final year, so excited to get done and back out into the world!   I am thinking about doing Three Rivers this coming year, how about you?

  • Sara Pfau

Yesss that was my work in exhibition in print. Thanks.
  • Ruta Reifen

Thank you Anne! So glad to meet you here:) Here's to an exciting creative 2012!

  • SOOHYE PARK

Thank you so much for adding me. I love your enameld work.   Lovely!!

  • Roger Rimel

Thank you. Your work is terrific, I have admired it for sometime. I love the way you use enamel ,the textures, the construction, all wonderful.

  • Roger Rimel

No,I don't seem to to make it to SNAG. I should try harder, maybe next year and your welcome.

  • Roger Rimel

Let me know when will be in St Louis and yes I know Peg. We could all meet at Craft Alliance,I think the metals exhibit curated by Paulette Myer from SIUE will still be up. Depending on  when you are in we will give you a studio tour at Craft Alliance (both locations). Peg teaches classes there.

  • Roger Rimel

Keep me posted. I work a regular day job,so it is difficult to get away during the day,but you could come the jewelry shop where I work or meet after work possibly. Good luck in KC.

  • Jan Smith

Great to connect with you, look forward to seeing at SNAG
  • Jan Smith

hi Anne yes planning on going to Toronto SNAG, am in canada..am on the  west coast few hours drive north of seattle..sadly toronto is just across the border from Detroit so bit of a journey

  • Alysia Fischer

    Thank you!  Love your work

  • Roxy Lentz

    Anne,

Good luck withthe Ferrous show. I know they will take your work. Some of these are images/work I haven't seen.

  • Roxy Lentz

I thought I saw your name on the Ferrous page. I didn't think you used steel, but a lot of jewelers use bits of it sometime. I had Larry Sanders take some images, and they turned out great.

  • Gigi Mariani

    Anne , with pleasure :)

  • Courtney Denise Lipson

Hi Anne, I just enjoyed looking through your photos...your pigeon holed series strikes me right now, as I'm trying to break from just that thing. Your creative connections framing your pieces in are inspirational.  Best wishes!

  • Deborrah Daher

Hi, Anne - thanks for the nice remarks about my work.  We seem to be working with some similar interests.  Glad to see you also work in series - very nice stuff!

  • Deborrah Daher

Toronto sounds like a great time, but I am not sure I can make it.  Haven't completely ruled it out yet, but it's unlikely.

  • Chelsea Fay

Hi Anne, it was great to meet you too! I was happy to see a familiar face on here! Thank you for your kind words, I love your work as well and I hope we meet again!

  • Chelsea Fay

I'm not sure yet. I'm graduating that week but I'm definitely going to try and make it up for at least a few days!

  • Sydney Lynch

thanks, Anne.  I just joined crafthaus.   Love your work,too-- inspiring!

  • Deborah Lozier

    Hi Anne,

I won't be in Toronto. My father passed away and I'm going to his memorial...I'm leaving soon and in the middle of grading before I go. but off the top of my head for exhaust fans, I purchased one from Grainger many years ago and talked with an engineer that was very helpful. Tell them what you are doing and they will suggest something. Getting a bigger one than you need is better then one that is too small, and the Less bends in your duct work the better, and if you have to have a bend, two 45 degree angles is better then one 90. Strait up to the roof is the best. Contact me again if you need to. I'll have more time in the next few weeks. -deb

  • Hilary Sanders

Hi Anne, Thank you for the kind words! Graphite was the focus of my thesis in school. I fell in love with the physical quality of it, and that it could also make marks. I've tried using it in enamels a couple of times, and it's interesting. I like that it becomes permanent in the enamel. Your enamels are gorgeous! I particularly love the settings. They are so well composed.
