Beauty Marks

Jewelry is meant to beautify and accentuate the form of the body. However, conventions of beauty vary tremendously from person to person, as well as across cultural and sub-cultural borders. As an jewelry artist, I have been investigating beauty norms, the relationship between body and beauty, and the way adornments interact with the body, but I really want to get beyond my own perspective. Thus, I am soliciting work relating to the body and beauty from artists, crafters, and makers of all kinds and all nationalities with the intention of "remixing" their pieces into wearable work. In this way, illustrations of beauty and the body will be remade into objects which interact directly with the body.

Each collaborator will send me a pair of small pieces, between 4"x4" and 12"x12" in size, one of which depicts the body in some way and the other which represents their conception of beauty. All the work will be documented, and selected pieces will be physically transformed by me into jewelry of some sort. The final exhibit would consist of all the submitted work, including the name, nationality, and any sub-cultural affiliations of the artists, and with the jewelry pieces displayed alongside images of the originals. While exact exhibition plans are subject to change, I expect to create a traveling exhibition, as well as blog extensively about it throughout the process.

The first round of the project would begin immediately. I would like to have the work by the end of January, 2013, with the show itself in August or September of 2013. I am presently based in upstate New York, USA; submitted pieces would be mailed there and that is where I will be working with them, but I am very interested in sending the final results out of the area as well as displaying them online.

Aside from the incredible opportunity crafthaus is offering to publicize the project and get feedback, I am asking for $400 to pay for collaborators' shipping costs, 6 months of a dedicated PO Box, the printing of digital work, and some materials for transforming the work. I want to make it as easy as possible for anyone who is interested to be a part of this project, and I can't wait to get started!

Thank you for reading this, and for your consideration.

As an example of some previous work in this vein, this piece embraces the pregnant body and the jewelry in question accentuates the form of the belly. But there are many ways in which the collaborator's work and my own could be related; for example, pieces of the collaborators' work might be set into silver like jewels, or a section of image might be etched into copper, or brass might be formed to mimic the contours of the body images submitted.

Furthermore, the "body" can be interpreted in a number of ways. The drawings above were based off of cellular processes, and jewelry was made to mimic the forms. The possibilities are endless, and will vary tremendously based on the work submitted.

Project Overview:
We are seeking funds for an upcoming exhibition titled Metals 2012. This exhibition will be an invitational exhibition to Colleges and Universities in the State of Michigan and bordering areas of Northern Ohio and Indiana. Through Metals 2012, we hope to increase the dialog across neighboring institutions and promote our craft to the community at large.

In total, we have identified 12 Colleges and Universities with metals programs within the region that will be invited. College for Creative Studies (CCS) has signed on as our host location. CCS not only has ample gallery space and security, but also a wide range of pedestals and walls for mounting the exhibition.

Each participating institution will have volunteers dropping off /picking up work and helping with mounting the exhibition. MSG will provide additional volunteers to create a digital version of the exhibition that will be posted on the MSG website and will also share it with the members of Crafthaus.

In February of 2011, Metals 2011 was hosted in the University of Michigan Health Care System Galleries. Participating institutions included: Bowling Green State University, College for Creative Studies and Eastern Michigan University with over 50 pieces of work created by students and faculty. Here is a link to last year’s exhibition Metals 2011: http://misilversmith.org/metals2011/

The requested budget would be used to print post cards (2500 cards for $143.10), mail the postcards to the participating institutions ($85), create labels for the artwork ($12.18) and cover a modest opening reception ($100).

I am requesting funding to create wearable electronic jewelry that give the wearer a tactile sensation derived from those experienced by patients suffering from thyroid cancer. These new works extend my current body of research titled Spectacular, a reference to the spectacle of images of bodies and illness in contemporary media.

I will be constructing a series of adornment objects (some with short multiple editions) that utilize heat, cold, forced air, electric current, and pressure to produce safe, but mildly uncomfortable, sensations like hot and cold flashes, dry mouth, chills, and congestion. Each adornment object will combine electronic components that are run using a tiny wearable computer (also known as a microcontroller chip). I will be both designing custom circuit boards using computer aided design (CAD), and fabricating aesthetically based housings for the electronics using traditional jewelry techniques combined with industrial fabrication methods like water jet cutting, 3D printing, and CNC milling. Some adornments will include wearable video monitors in conjunction with the sensation.

I am requesting $400 of funding that will be used for materials; electronic components (including thermoelectric heating/cooling, microchips, boards, and other components), and industrial fabrication services to produce custom CAD designed circuit boards.

Different from my previous work, this work is derived from personal experience. The sensations are based off of those experienced by my mother while dying of thyroid cancer. This led me to consider the lack of tactile experience in contemporary cultures consumption of images and objects, and the disassociation of images of the body from physiological processes.

This work utilizes similar techniques to my current project titled Virus Simulation (working title) in collaboration with a bio-medical engineer at Brown University. It consists of broaches containing wearable computers that simulate the spread of HPV (Human Papillomavirus). Each device is uniquely paired to an event attendee. Once set free into the event, devices will communicate with each other spreading virtual disease.

Title of Project: Redefining, Redesigning Fashion

The Crafthaus Project Grant would help defray the cost of making 4 rings made of 14kt gold and precious stones.

Redefining, Redesigning Fashion is an invitational exhibition that will explore how designers use clothing and accessories to create a personal appearance while caring about the environment and economic and social concerns. This exhibition will highlight the importance of understanding the environmental and ethical impact the fashion and jewelry industries create.
The exhibition will be presented at the Goldstein Museum of Design, part of the University of Minnesota’s College of Design, from January 19-May 26, 2013.

My jewelry accepted into the exhibition will be handmade out of 14kt recycled or fairtrade gold set with fairtrade level 1 gemstones. Mining is the most ecologically and ethically damaging industry and jewelry is 100% dependent on mined metals and gemstones, giving it the highest environmental impact of products produced. It is important for me to create a new kind of jewelry that is beautiful, precious, and still sustainable. My new reality is about designing smart by integrating sustainable thinking into my design process from the very beginning helping to redefine the jewelry industry with traceability and transparency both ethically and environmentally.

Project Overview:

Outline/Goal of Project
I build steel furniture by hand-bending cold steel rod and welding it together with hand-cut steel plate. My project is a new design, a coffee table, which will have the symmetry of my four-legged side table, but with six legs. It will weigh approximately 100 lbs. To enable me to transport this table to galleries, I will also buy and install a hitch on my old Honda and rent a U-Haul trailer.

The geometry of this design is more complex than I’ve done before, and I do not use CAD software. I design on paper, and draw the leg templates freehand. I use pushpins and string to draw the full-size pattern of the elliptical top. I use only hand-held tools, and, as I don’t have a bandsaw, I have my tabletops cut by hand at a local machine shop.

I am self-taught, except for two classes in basic welding. I started developing my tables in late 2011, and now have a family of three designs.

In return for the grant, I will document my process through pictures and captions. I will include my road show and, if possible, some of the people I meet in my search for an outlet for my work. I will do my best to make this documentation entertaining.

Start Date and Duration
I will buy materials within a week of receiving the grant. Fitting the work around my job as a freelance writer, I expect to complete the table within a month. I will then pack and transport it to galleries, where I’ll attempt to persuade gallery owners to come outside and have a look. That should be interesting. I expect this process will take two to three weeks for planning and execution.

Location
I live in Loveland, Ohio. I construct and weld in my basement, and bend the table legs outside on sunny days using an adapted vise I attached to a leg of our deck. I have no affiliation with any college or art school, which is why my search for outlets is rather involved and difficult.

Funding
I expect materials and expendables to cost $180, and the trailer hitch to cost about $150. Trailer rental is $20 a day; I expect to need a trailer for two days. I am requesting $370 to cover these costs.

Other Information
The picture on the next page shows the console table I made this spring. It is modeled on a kitchen island I built over the course of several years, also shown on the next page. The island I designed and made by trial and error. The top is wrapped in roofing copper, a job I don’t recommend doing by trial and error. If you want to try that, get advice from a professional. Apart from basic welding, I evolved all processes I use without instruction or assistance.

Project Overview:

The Chain Project consist of creating a chain out of chains submitted by artists for an online exhibition at crafthaus.ning website.

To participate artist must submit the photograph of their chain and this image will be used to built the chain - of - chains.

The complete Project may be viewed at http://www.chainproject.com

To perform this project one essential skill is to keep a final image unit, an accurate work is required to convert all the images received, mainly to convert the white background of all chains uniformly to cristalline white and preserve the original colors of submitted works.

After this online exhibition, on November 2012, the project will migrate to be seen in São Paulo at A CASA museum of Brazilian object. This time, with the real pieces, as well as invited designers.

My grant request will be destined for the professional treatment of the images received by the artists and those images will be used to design the catalog,
Below, an example that ilustrates the image treatment needed to apply in mostly all works. (chain by Roberto Zanon).

I would choose to create and moderate a sculpture that would use the bays tides, currents and winds to scribe 14 consecutive 24 hour drawings.

I intend to accomplish this using a sculptural buoy that incorporates copper etching plates could interact with the San Francisco Bay. This Buoy once created and deployed would be accessed by boat once a day for two weeks straight.

Each visit would be an opportunity to swap out a copper cone which would be the record of the buoys movements from the past 24 hours. Each plate would be further enhanced through an etching process utilizing Kala Art Institute artists residency (the Crafthaus Grant money would be used to obtain the access to Kala for one month) to etch and print the plate.

The final product would be an installation of all 14 copper cones and 14 prints made from these cones. A sound recording would be made from the Buoy and these recordings would become part of the instillation.

This project dovetails perfectly into my desire to create sculptures that act as meditations between myself and nature.

Through time, religion and art have had an exchange with each other, forcing the hands of both the artists and the populous of various civilizations. In some cases, art and religion have combined into one belief. The sacred art of Alchemy is an example of this combination, and has existed since the rules of the Egyptian Pharaohs.

Alchemy is a spiritual practice of material control and purification, focusing on technique, practice, and preparation. Through technique, practice, and preparation, Alchemists believed in achieving a closeness to God. These same principles of devotion can be seen in modern craft.

Much of what Alchemy can teach the modern craft community, however, has been lost to time due to religious persecution and European expulsion during the start of the fist millennia. Though it was lost to Western artisans, much of the practices remained healthy in Eastern cultures, and still thrive there today.

For this grant proposal, I am bringing to light and attempting to prove that these principles are worthy of receiving funding for research and development for the contemporary practices of crafts people. One practice, in particular, has much to offer today’s artisans.

Through the history of Alchemy, there was a legendary stone that was claimed to give the user supreme power: The Philosopher’s stone. It is widely accepted that this stone was a metaphor for enlightenment. However, stones of various kinds were created through alchemic processes. Through research into Eastern literature, I believe that it is possible to create vegetable stones. These stones are created using organic plant materials that are treated in a particular way based on the rules of alchemy.

The three primary steps of alchemy are to separate the components of a material, purify them, then recombine them in a particular proportion in order to create something new. Vegetable stones are created with this three step system in which different chemical processes (such as distillation) are used to separate the essential oils, ethanol, and the physical remains of the plant. When recombined under heat and pressure in a special ration, a stone is created. If this process could be refined, jewelers could create stones using plant materials that would otherwise be wasted, meaning that this is a process which would push recycling to the next step.

The funding would be used to purchase specific chemistry supplies to be able to process the plant material. As support, I will be consulting with Peter Gratien and Anthony Mangan, two biochemists from Syracuse, NY in order to ensure safety and accuracy along the way. The proposed final product would be a piece of jewelry with a vegetable stone set on it, along with a well-documented and refined process on the creation of these stones.

About the name:
‘Syntechnia’ is the Greek word for guild, trade union or association. It’s made up of two other words, the prefix ‘syn-‘ meaning ‘plus’ and the second part that derives from the word ‘techni’, meaning ‘art’ or ‘craft’.

About the project:
For the SynTechnia project we will use an online platform, a virtual classroom, where Crafthaus members from around the world will gather and have group critiques and meetings to promote better design.

Meetings will take place once or twice a month in different days and times to accommodate as many makers as possible. There won’t be any fees, but if there is interest from more participants than the platform can support, some selection (random or by application) may be needed. All mediums, all levels and all styles are welcome.

Every meeting will start with an ice breaker, a game that will activate the right side of the brain, create a safe environment and establish an atmosphere of growth. We will set the ground rules and the objectives of the meeting and then participants will be asked to present samples of their work to the group. This could be either live, for those who have a camera, or online if you have images already uploaded either on Crafthaus or elsewhere. Taking advantage of the virtual classroom, we will all be able to communicate (either write or even talk if you have a microphone) and navigate pages together, use a whiteboard or share files.
My job will be to facilitate the discussion, so that all participants will benefit from their share of the meeting and so that ideas will be formulated towards constructive criticism and effective evaluation.

The purpose is for participants to leave the meeting with a concrete understanding of the characteristics of their work and an awareness of its strong points, weaknesses and possible areas of improvement. Firm action points may be suggested, but you should understand that this may not always be feasible. We will attempt to separate objective from subjective opinions, but all will be noted and discussed. One of the biggest advantages of the selected online platform is that the meetings will be recorded and participants will get unlimited access to re-watch as needed.

About myself and the rationale of this project:
Since I set up my own studio with a strong educational background, I have often found that I miss group critiques and advice from peers. It is not uncommon for an artist to be stuck, isolated in the studio, with no one to turn to for feedback. I also sometimes get frustrated when I turn to friends or family for advice and all I get is ‘it’s nice’, ‘it’s interesting’ (or, the worst, when I know that something is wrong but just cannot put my finger on it:) ‘wow, you are so talented, how did you make this?!’…
I have teaching experience and started SynTechnia as an experiment with some of my students and local fellow crafters. It was so well perceived, that I thought I had to make it bigger and move it online so more people can take part and benefit from it.

Project Overview:

The visual arts category known as Fiber Art has been exploding during recent years in dynamic gallery and museum exhibitions, in coffee table and “how to” books, in university programs and on-line workshops, and more. The Museum of Art and Design (MAD) in New York mounted exhibitions in which fiber art was showcased: “Radical Lace and Subversive Knitting” and “Pricked: Extreme Embroidery” brought in record crowds. In spring of this year Philadelphia hosted multiple fiber art venues- exhibitions, conferences, classes and workshops- making up FiberPhiladelphia 2012 to which thousands flocked from several countries; American Craft moved its headquarters to be closer to the fiber arts action in Minneapolis; the Philadelphia Museum of Art recently showcased the art exhibition, “Craft Spoken Here” a broad overview of how the craft of fibers has given birth to the art of fibers; internet site Crafthaus, a wonderful and selective showcase of fiber art is booming with talent; new magazine Fiber Art Now has opened to much lauded success, and the DIY movement is going strong with classes in knitting, basketry, weaving, sewing and more gaining in popularity as a whole new generation learns the craft of fiber techniques, using it in multiple artistic ways.

However, Atlanta has lagged behind in showcasing this important artistic area. There are many of us fiber enthusiasts who are trying very hard to increase exposure to, and recognition of, the arena of fiber art; South East Fiber Arts Alliance or SEFAA, the state of Georgia’s first dedicated fiber arts center, opened its doors in Atlanta in September of 2011. I was a Board Director and part of the planning committee for this venture which seeks to bring the fiber arts to the forefront of the Atlanta arts scene; there is much hard work ahead for the promotion and recognition of the value of our organization to Atlanta and its environs. The High Museum, Atlanta, Georgia has virtually no contemporary fiber art collection save for a few Gees Bend and historical quilts, a few embroideries, and assorted bits and pieces of an historical nature. There are few exhibitions that feature fiber art in the Atlanta area.

I seek to grow awareness of this exciting visual arts discipline and to expose the people, art enthusiasts and art critics of Atlanta to the wealth and excitement inherent to fiber art. By showcasing artists who incorporate either fibers or fiber arts techniques in unusual, dynamic ways in both functional and non-functional pieces, awareness and enjoyment will be expanded for this exciting area of art.

BACKGROUND
This past May, I was invited by a craft school in Istanbul, Turkey to give a workshop on paper-resin jewelry. In the workshop, I had ten students all from different backgrounds: some hobbyists, some designers, and even a teacher of handcrafts from the southeast of Turkey. Her name is Müjde. She teaches in a womenʼs cooperative in the southeast of Turkey. I learned that there are many women's groups in Turkey who are trying to help rural area women to become more financially independent. These women have little education, so they have difficulty getting good jobs. They get together at this cooperative center and make handcrafts. They have great handskills but they have challenges designing because they donʼt have any design education. This cooperative sent one of their teachers to my workshop in Istanbul to learn the resin-paper technique because they know that they need to learn new techniques. These women generally make jewelry, accessories, and tablecloths through knitting, felting, crocheting, and tatting. However, they keep repeating the same things over and over again. They need designers! So, my wife and I, who is also a designer, decided to help them by brainstorming with them to create new designs.

In June, we traveled to the village of Ömerli, outside the city of Mardin in the southeast of Turkey, where Müjdeʼs ÇATOM is located. We spent three days there, brainstorming new designs, meeting the other women of the ÇATOM, and learning more about the area. The entire time we all felt like old friends—the personal connection and positive energy was incredible! We returned to the USA in July and have been sharing our recent experiences with many friends and colleagues. It appears that our enthusiasm has been contagious because everyone has been so supportive and encouraging. Several people are even anxious to get personally involved themselves.

Right now, not many people want to buy the ÇATOMʼs work because they don't make anything original. There is only one problem. We can consult for them for free, but we don't have money to buy materials for them! They need financial support to buy materials because just having some design ideas will not earn them money—they have to actually produce the design. Therefore, my wife and I decided to apply to this grant so that we can help them in providing materials as well. This funding will make a significant positive change in the lives of the women involved.

The GAP (Southeasten Anatolian Project) Administration, created by the Turkish national government, is currently engaged in a range of projects that integrate the economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainable development through strategies for poverty alleviation and that focus on participatory approaches and capacity building for disadvantaged groups from a gender perspective. The creation of the Multi-Purpose Community Centers (ÇATOMs) is one of the most significant among these projects. First launched in 1995 in the region, there are now 30 ÇATOMs active in 9 provinces. The target population of these centers are women and young girls.

ÇATOMs are community based and participatory centers established in: the neighborhoods of cities mostly inhabited by rural migrants; district centers; and centrally located villages. Inhabitants of these neighborhoods are mostly persons working informally in marginal, temporary, seasonal and precarious jobs for minimal wages/incomes. Children also have to work to support their families. Any improvement in the social and economic status of women directly improves the family welfare overall. Therefore, besides being a must in terms of human rights, projects designed to improve the status of women contribute significantly to social welfare as well.

In addition to community participation, inter-organizational cooperation is also emphasized and efforts are made to expand cooperation and launch joint projects with local, national and international organizations. The aim is to develop a healthy dialogue between the neediest sections of the population and governmental/civil society organizations.

ÇATOMs are centers where women are empowered in economic and social terms. Each ÇATOM is a space specially developed for women and this space is used for training, income generating activities and organization of participating women. ÇATOMs are important centers not only in social areas (including female literacy, health education, legal rights, etc.) but also for encouraging women to participate in the labor force. Since the ÇATOM remains there after a cohort of participants completes their courses, their information and skills can be renewed, updated through informal networks, and sustained. Women and young girls earn income by producing either at ÇATOMs or in their homes and may ultimately find jobs. Training and micro financing facilities for those with entrepreneurial skills can even help them start their own businesses. For the past several years, about 200 women have found jobs and 8-10 women have started their own businesses each year.

With funding provided by the Crafhaus Project Grant I propose to create a series of laser cut neckpieces that will blur the identity between two disparate materials found in the ocean environment: seaweed and trash. This series, titled Flotsam & Jetsam, will explore the aesthetic dichotomy between these artificial and natural materials.

According to statistics compiled by Save the Bay, (a Rhode Island based organization aimed at protecting the local ocean and coastlines) Rhode Islands five beaches yielding the highest amount of trash produced upwards of 10,000lbs of detritus in 2011 alone. This shocking amount of litter seems comparable to the amount of seaweed and other plant life found on the beach.

In response to this overwhelming amount of trash, Flotsam & Jetsam will put a focus on this litter while presenting the concept in a material that visually references the oceans organic elements.

I will gather debris from each of the five beaches that Save the Bay has identified as the highest grossing, and will then arrange the collected trash into compositions reminiscent of bouquets of plant materials such as seaweed. I will then laser cut the silhouettes of these arrangements into translucent latex sheeting that emulates seaweed commonly found in local waters. These neckpieces will be the same dimensions as the original refuse; yet will be embellished with beads to imitate polyps and air bladders typically found on seaweed.

Similar to my previous works, Flotsam & Jetsam will present the viewer with adornment that presents a seditious concept upon further investigation beyond the aesthetic appeal. Ultimately, these neckpieces would be presented alongside large format, high-resolution photographs of the debris arrangements that informed the laser cut shapes.

Flotsam & Jetsam will emphasize the dilemma created by the existence of refuse in the ocean, it’s prolific volume, and the effect that this plague of waste has upon it’s surrounding environment.

While final numbers are not yet confirmed, Shipping estimates to get the work to Albuquerque come in at around $800. This grant would be to offset the shipping and installation costs. This is quoted from a discounted UPS store who works with Maine College of Art on large shipping jobs.

Project Description:

I am applying for funds to help offset the cost of shipping and installation for a project that is already most of the way finished. I have been invited to publicly install my work Build Your Own Cities at this year’s International Symposium on Electronic Art (ISEA) being hosted in Albuquerque New Mexico. This work, which has been exhibited in San Diego in its initial iteration, consists of a wooden constructed 25’ long map of a Southwestern Neighborhood as seen from satellite imagery on Google Earth. The map consists of a long string of mutated sawhorse forms that take the shape of a scale version of this suburban neighborhood. The only landmarks represented across the top are the swimming pools, which are carved into the top in the exact locations where each exists in the real neighborhood. These pools are lined with brilliant blue resin and filled with water. Each pool has one LED embedded in it, which causes the water to glow bright “swimming pool blue” at night. Spread out across the top, I will be placing piles of small wooden building blocks. Visitors will be invited to “build their own cities, developments, neighborhoods, and structures” amongst the space populated by the small pools.

This work is intended as a fun and interactive way for viewers to question the ways in which we inhabit our land and spaces, and to try their hand at rethinking that, in a playful and impermanent way. This work has been exhibited in a similar form at the San Diego Museum of art, and the interactive nature of the work drew in numerous curious visitors, who would try to construct the most elaborate structures with the blocks, before the next person added to it or destroyed it. This work has undergone some changes since it was first created, and each time it is shown, the interactive quality changes slightly.

I have been invited to install this piece during one of the large outdoor events at this year’s ISEA, which is a great honor, and an unbeatable opportunity. I will also be presenting on the work in a lecture setting at the main event.

I am requesting funds to offset the cost of shipping this large installation to and from Albuquerque for this event. Below are some installation photos of the work in various iterations.
Thank you for your consideration.
