Ceci n'est pas une bombe - Michael C. Goodward

Michael Goodward's sleek and sexy sculptures and installations hinge on a subtle twist of expectations or a surprising use of materials. In describing his work, the artist writes, "I have a profound desire to communicate intricate ideas in a concise and reduced manner using a variety of easily available domestic and industrial materials."

An Introduction to the Arts of Mars

- by 2013 SNAG /crafthaus Conference Scholarship recipient Parker Erich Brown

For the past several years, my primary professional activities have been directly related to the production of custom armour for practitioners of MARE (martial arts of Renaisssance Europe). This is an international movement that has been gaining steady recognition in the martial arts world for its investigation of historical European fighting techniques as documented in original 14th, 15th and 16th century fighting manuals. While a good portion of these techniques are unarmoured and unarmed in nature, most pertain to the use of swords, shield, staff weapons and, most importantly for me, the use of armour.

I hope you will join my blog on crafthaus and ask many questions. I look forward to sharing insight into the world of modern armour!

PART 3: The Conference at the 2013 Beijing International Jewelry Art Biennale

- by Ezra Satok Wolman

The next morning our activities began with the Round Table Discussion at BIFT.  We assembled in a boardroom to discuss the development of “Jewelry Culture” in China, and how to further elevate the educational model in China’s institutions.  One of the big questions that came from the Dean of BIFT was, “How can China ensure the success of more jewelry artists”?

I'm writing to share the story of Helene Lumia, a glass artist
- by Anne Fiala

I met Helene during a summer session at Penland in the summer of 2012. She was one of my three roommates and on a full scholarship to study glass with Beth Lipman and Leo Tecosky. A fun and bubbly girl, she made me laugh as each night she would come back to our room with a huge smile on her face and rattle on and on about everything she learned, how she couldn't wait to make this and try that. It was great to see a 20 year old SO excited about making. I recently learned that this past May Helene's doctors found a cyst on her spinal cord. After various surgeries and treatments, Helene is now living life as a quadriplegic and her family is looking for help.

Please support this family. Share the story and donate. Thank you.

Hanne Mannheimer - Ceramic Artist

I am a ceramic artist; this is how I describe myself. Sometimes I say I am a maker, that I work in clay or that I teach. It all depends on the situation and who is asking. Sometimes it gets a little complicated trying to explain the practicalities of being a self-employed ceramic artist, many roles and descriptions.

Polymathology

- by John Lunn

A couple of days ago I clicked from someone’s link on Facebook to an IQ test. I’ve never done one before and figured what the hell, give it a whirl. I know I have some brain power and always wondered how I figure on the IQ curve. After 20 questions of spatial, mathematical and conceptual design that started out fairly easy and got pretty tough, I hit the submit button and it spit out the score: “170. Einstein level genius.”

Interviewing NCECA 2013 Emerging Artist Amber Ginsburg

- by Kalika Bowlby

Amber Ginsburg works frequently with clay but her work responds to histories, locations and narratives in a way that is not bound by specific materials or methods of expression.  She often works collaboratively and engages audiences in a participatory manner, creating dynamic site specific installations.  Amber generously shared her time to answer a few questions I had about her work and process.

Showing Publicly: Special Edition Art Palm Beach 17

- by Rebecca Rose

This blog post is mostly pictures than text, in order to emphasize and give full credit to, the incredible amount of jewelry, glass, and ceramics showing among paintings and sculpture. Unfortunately, not all of the artist's information was near the work in some cases, nonetheless, enjoy!

Cooperation with a Glass Blower (VIDEO)

Research on glass presented by the Product Design Master students following a workshop led by designer Ronan Bouroullec and glassblower Matteo Gonet, Milan Italy.

After a visit lasting a few hours to the workshop of glassblower Matteo Gonet in Basle, students had to design and produce tools and utensils, and invent scenarios that would create an interesting effect in Matteo’s artisanal glass-making process. We had five days to create a successful test palette. The result is a set of experimental glass pieces that overtly showcases the art of glassblowing, as well the process that went into each individual piece.
