Wax Working

In this 4 week introduction to wax carving class, learn to custom make your own designs starting from an original idea. During this course you will be guided to complete a set of designs utilizing different wax carving and sculpting techniques. Wax has properties that allow you to execute designs unsuited for fabrication, like sculpting, modeling and the incorporation of interesting surface textures. You will learn how to work with soft and hard waxes to produce your unique designs. Through weekly in-class demonstrations you will practice wax sculpting in preparation for casting as well as electroformig. Both of these processes can be used for one-of-a-kind work as well as for production lines and editions. This course will also introduce historic and contemporary examples of wax working in jewelry and systems of adornment through visual presentations.

4 week course
Wednesdays from 6-9pm
Begins June 6th
Taught by Ruth Reifen

Ruth Reifen was first introduced to the craft of jewelry making during an evening class at Central St. Martins College of Art when living in London in 2001. It was love at first solder!

In 2009 she graduated with her Bachelors in Design from the Jewelry Design department at Shenkar College of Design, Israel. Ruth pursued her fascination with wearable art in her MFA studies at the Rhode Island School of Design, where she graduated in 2011 from the Jewelry and Metals department.

Ruth is now based in Brooklyn and has her studio practice in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. She has presented in galleries and museums in Israel, Europe and the United States. Her work is part of the permanent collection at the Museum of Art and Design in New York.

She currently works in the fashion jewelry industry in New York City as a jewelry designer. Ruth also teaches in the Metals department at the School of Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, MA, and at 92Y in New York.

Chain Making ~ Jun 23 + 24 | Sat + Sun | 11am - 5:30pm | $200
with instructor Emilie Shapiro

This weekend workshop on Chain Making is an excellent way to hone your soldering skills! Using sterling silver, we will develop patterns and links using curlicues, bars, circles, and other shapes to connect into a unique and beautiful handmade chain. Learn to coil wire to make circles and loops, how to use pin
connections for bar pieces, or create a more intricate link to be cast
and a matching toggle. The use of hammer texture and assorted finishes
such as matte, oxidized, or high polish will be covered.Complete your chain with a handmade clasp.

Filigree ~ July 14 + 15 | Sat + Sun | 11am - 5:30pm | $200
with instructor Caroline Glemann

Filigree - from the Latin
"filum" meaning thread and "granum" meaning seed. Filigree is the art of curling, twisting and plaiting fine threads of precious metals into
intricate designs joined by soldering into a delicate tracery. Beautiful patterns can be designed in a lacy, openwork pattern, or can be set into a metal framework, or soldered to a metal base. Filigree has a rich history, having originated in the ancient world and spread by trade and travelers throughout many cultures, each developing their own style and motifs. Filigree is a handmade craft, there are no
machines to duplicate it. We will be creating pendants, brooches and earrings in this beautiful and ancient technique.

Resin ~ July 21 + 22 | Sat + Sun | 11am - 5:30pm | $200
with instructor Kathleen DiResta

Learn the basics of working
with different epoxies and resins to add color and interest to your
pieces. We will be creating domes and bezels (both closed and open back) that we can fill with pigments. The epoxy can be mixed with a color to
simulate enamel or it can be poured over an image or decorative paper.
Items like sparkles, beads, dried flowers, or other materials of your
choice, can be suspended in the resins as well. We will be making a two
part putty mold to create a 3D piece out of resin. Experiment with
mixing pigment, eye shadow, mica powder, spices, pastel crayons, papers, objects and more into the resin to give it dimension.

PMC ~ July 28 + 29 | Sat + Sun | 11am - 5:30pm | $200
With instructor Terry Kovalcik
In this 2-day workshop you will get several hands-on, step-by-step demonstrations on how to create with PMC silver—in lump, sheet and paste form. Learn how wonderfully this material can be manipulated by rolling, molding, carving, and texturing. Once fired, it can be oxidized and polished just like traditional metalsmithing. Explore this fantastic medium while making pendants, earrings, and
hollow beads. Students will be encouraged while exploring these
techniques to find their own voice and style and have whole lot of fun
doing it. PMC is a unique jewelry making material. This clay-like
product is a malleable substance that is composed of fine silver
particles in an organic binder. It can be sculpted and manipulated like potter’s clay. After firing in a kiln, the end result is your unique design created in fine silver (.999).

Cynthia Eid - Post Conference Workshop
Sponsored by Colorado Metalsmithing Association

Argentium Silver: Fusing, Soldering, Granulation,
K** Boo

Discover how to use this innovative new metal for your work with the guidance
of renowned Argentium Silver specialist Cynthia Eid. Argentium Sterling is an
alloy that is at least 92.5% pure silver; it does not firescale, is highly
tarnish resistant, is more malleable and ductile than traditional sterling,
fuses and welds more easily than traditional sterling, and can be hardened
using a kitchen oven or kiln. During this course you will learn a variety of
techniques including annealing, soldering, fusing and hardening Argentium
Sterling Silver sheet and wire. Argentium Sterling has superb fusing qualities
and demonstrations will include fusing granules to sheet, sheet to sheet, wire
to wire, and gold to AS. Argentium Sterling is also a wonderful material to use
for K** Boo, (Asian gilding technique used to apply thin sheets of 24K gold to
silver with heat and pressure) since the surface doesn’t need to be heated and
pickled as extensively as traditional sterling prior to application of the gold
foil. Following demonstrations, you will have time to make your own samples
and/or finished designs. This class is appropriate for students with basic
metalsmithing skills as well as professionals.

Exotic Wood Jewelry at Touchstone Center for Crafts

Kris Leinen / Weeklong Workshop / $445 (less crafthaus 5% discount)

Wood has been used in jewelry for thousands of years, and is a marvelous renewable resource. With the cost of precious metal at an all-time high, exotic woods can add a unique and striking element that many artists overlook. Wood is similar to a finger print, where no two pieces are quite identical. It also possesses a natural physical property that cannot be created by man. In this course we will use exotic hardwoods as a durable material for creating functional, wearable art jewelry or small scale sculpture. From carving wood pieces that can be set like stones, making beads, or creating an entire piece solely out of wood, you will learn different methods of cold-connecting this wonderful, natural material into your own jewelry designs and metalsmithing creations.

Kris Leinen was born and raised in Houston, Texas. In 2006, He attended Touchstone as an assistant for the jewelry studio. Kris received a BFA in Metals from Texas State University at San Marcos, Texas, in 2006, and attended the New Approach School for Jewelers in Virginia Beach, Virginia. At a high-end jewelry store in College Station, Texas, Kris designed and created custom jewelry for numerous clients. The experience provided him with industry experience that he could share with students, and Kris’ passion for art and teaching lead him to further his education. Recently, he attended Texas Tech University (TTU) in Lubbock, Texas, where he will graduate with a MFA in jewelry design and metalsmithing in May of 2012. For the last three years, Kris has taught undergraduate students at TTU in jewelry design and metalsmithing

Andrew Cooperman teaches "Imaginative Captures (Zengineering)"
www.touchstonecrafts.org="" calendar?eventid="418210&EventViewMode=E\" ventdetails=""> from June 12 to 15 at Touchstone Center for Crafts.
Tuition is $500 for this four-day workshop, and SNAG members receive a
5% discount off tuition. Click on the workshop title to sign up.

Imagine a more fluid way to incorporate a gemstone, enamel or found
object into your work: a fresh approach that goes beyond the old
standbys of prongs and bezels. By understanding and then reapplying the
basic principles behind stone setting, we can develop new, elegant, more
fully integrated setting solutions; break down some of the rigid walls
that exist between ideas, processes and materials. This is Capturing.
This information-packed workshop is designed to liberate the
problem-solver within by discussing the why's along with the
how's, and offering a wide variety of tricks, shortcuts and studio
tips--along with some really bad jokes. Demonstrations and an extensive
collection of samples will be used to illustrate topics including cold
connecting, caging, back setting, the flex shaft and advanced soldering
techniques.

*Participants must have basic jewelry skills and a familiarity with
tools and studio equipment. Required skills include drilling with the
flex shaft machine, sawing, filing, silver soldering and basic bezel
setting. Students should have experience with: the rolling mill,
torches, hammers, buffers, etc. Those who enroll must be able to hard
silver solder unattended.

Andrew Cooperman is a metalsmith, writer and teacher who lives in
Seattle, WA. His work is featured in galleries nationwide, including
Patina Gallery in Santa Fe, deNovo in Palo Alto and Velvet daVinci
Gallery in San Fransisico. He is a past recipient of a WESTAF/NEA
Fellowship, and teaches seminars and workshops around the country, most
recently as a visiting lecturer at the University of Washington. In
addition to one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces, Andy also works with clients
as a custom jeweler and commission metalsmith. His work can be found in
the permanent collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, Central
College, Pella Iowa and most recently in the exhibitions The Art Of
Gold, Metalisms, Chess and The Ring Show. Publications include the books
Art Jewelry Today, 1000 Rings, 500 Brooches, The Craft of
Silversmithing, The Penland Book of Jewelry and Fundamentals of

June 24 - 28, 2012 at IdyllwildArts Metals Week I will be teaching a workshop on incorporating just about anything in jewelry.

Found Objects and Unusual Materials

Anything can and should be made into jewelry.  Sometimes all it takes is a sideways movement from a traditional technique to incorporate unusual materials. Rather than focus on why certain materials/objects won’t work as jewelry let’s make them work.

We will discuss formal fabrication techniques, cold connections and adhesives as a springboard to using non-traditional materials as ornament. A focal point will be using concrete in jewelry applications but don’t stop there.  Bring anything and everything you would be interested in making wearable.

Is jewelry for celebrating and flaunting the precious?  What is precious and why?  Can the mundane be precious if treated as such?  This is a class in thinking, experimentation and saying “yes” -- if you conceive it, you can make it.

This is an advanced beginner/intermediate class.  A basic knowledge of soldering and hand tool use is required.

For inquiries please use the link above.

Imaginative Captures (Zengineering) at Touchstone Center for Crafts

Andrew Cooperman / Four-Day Workshop / $500 (less crafthaus 5% discount)

Imagine a more fluid way to incorporate a gemstone, enamel or found object into your work: a fresh approach that goes beyond the old standbys of prongs and bezels. By understanding and then reapplying the basic principles behind stone setting, we can develop new, elegant, more fully integrated setting solutions; break down some of the rigid walls that exist between ideas, processes and materials. This is Capturing. This information-packed workshop is designed to liberate the problem-solver within by discussing the why’s along with the how’s, and offering a wide variety of tricks, shortcuts and studio tips--along with some really bad jokes. Demonstrations and an extensive collection of samples will be used to illustrate topics including cold connecting, caging, back setting, the flex shaft and advanced soldering techniques.

*Participants must have basic jewelry skills and a familiarity with tools and studio equipment. Required skills include drilling with the flex shaft machine, sawing, filing, silver soldering and basic bezel setting. Students should have experience with: the rolling mill, torches, hammers, buffers, etc. Those who enroll must be able to hard silver solder unattended.

Andrew Cooperman is a metalsmith, writer and teacher who lives in Seattle, WA. His work is featured in galleries nationwide, including Patina Gallery in Santa Fe, deNovo in Palo Alto and Velvet daVinci Gallery in San Fransisico. He is a past recipient of a WESTAF/NEA Fellowship, and teaches seminars and workshops around the country, most recently as a visiting lecturer at the University of Washington. In addition to one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces, Andy also works with clients as a custom jeweler and commission metalsmith. His work can be found in the permanent collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, Central College, Pella Iowa and most recently in the exhibitions The Art Of Gold, Metalisms, Chess and The Ring Show.
