Currently in my work, I am interested in the the way our hands are used throughout everyday experience. Our hands are taken for granted in the routinized and mundane moments of our day; or as Frank R.Wilson writes in his book, The Hand,“Our lives are so full of commonplace experience in which the hands are so skillfully and silently involved that we rarely consider how dependent upon them we actually are”.
I am interested in the moments in which our hands are involved. It is my goal to highlight the interface between the hand and the moment it is put to use.Through the making of handles I hope to skillfully and silently involve the hand. Skillful in my process of hand fabricating each piece and silent through the poetic and contemplative quality they retain when viewed away from functionality.
By freezing in time the ordinary aspects of our hands use I hope to question it’s functionality in both the everyday realm and that of the hand made.
