The stylist was hired by the magazine for this shoot, but is not a Post staffer. They all have standard contracts which describe fair use, reimbursement for loss, etc. Each stylist is different but virtually all work freelance. Some work on shows, and are responsible for pulling clothes and accessories for the host or hosts. Most seem to work on a project basis: for example, for a magazine shoot(with a theme, model or star), or a commercial, where they dress the actors. I've seen many at Bloomies - they buy and return everything after a shoot.(Note - women buying 8 pairs of gold hoops at once are stylists..) ----All free publicity is desirable, but consumer press, like this insert in the Post always results in more calls than trade publicity. As an example, I recently had 3 pieces featured on the cover of JCK Magazine, which is THE jewelry trade rag. (and I will post those pics today....) I was so excited - and blown away when I saw that they used my work on the cover. Really. However, I got more calls after Kelly Ripa wore one of my rings on her show, than I did after the JCK cover. Such is the power of tv.... Still, the JCK cover, and that recognition (from peers and editors who see jewelry all the time, every day) means much more to me, even if it doesn't result in sales. Silly but true. All of it is good - since name recognition builds over time.... .

Most interesting. Can I ask something else, please?

About the stylist: This was a stylist for the magazine, correct? Were you given a contract or something in writing? From your personal experience with stylists, what exactly is it that they do?

Benefits: Since she was borrowing the items from you, your "payment" so to speak was crediting you in the magazine. You have been in magazines quite a few times by now, would you agree that this exposure has paid off for you? Did you notice increased sales or customer recognition afterwards and since? This kind of PR is definitely a neat tag to put on one's resume...

Thanks Brigitte! I wish I had tips to share, but alas, I have no secrets. Other than being in the right place at the right time with the right stuff. The stylist approached me during one of my trunk shows at Bloomingdale's and asked to borrow several items, including the necklace I was wearing. (Yes, I gladly relinquished it...) After checking my site later that night, she asked for several more items. I wish I knew how to meet stylists or editors!! I'm told that people simply send them line sheets or press releases, but I don't know if that is effective. I'm tempted to hire a marketing/pr consultant, since,as you know, if you make the jewelry yourself, you don't have time to publicize it as well. If only I had unlimited funds!!

Congrats! Great job, Mindy!! May I ask how this connection was made? I often wonder how artists manage to get their work into magazines. Any tips you could share? Do you work with a stylist maybe ?
