During our travels to the Artic Circle we had the opportunity to spend quite a bit of time with indigenous artists. Trading materials, stories and techniques with artists in other cultures is one of the great joys of travel. Our work has been influenced in many ways from these experiences. We never seek to copy native work, but instead let what we learn percolate through our own vision and style.

This bracelet is an echo of the many ancient ivory carvings we have seen. The materials are modern; polymer clay specifically, that has been manipulated to give the feeling of an ancient natural material without trying to be a “faux” look. In doing so we are striving to achieve something unique, something of our own. The same is true of the fish design, which follows the tradition of native carvers, but not the form.

Polymer clay over wood. 3.5 in dia. (88 mm)
