This piece is an exaggerated representation of a rug from my
parent’s basement. This was an iconic component of my childhood. I would get lost in the bright colors of the red, yellow, and brown diamond motif. The directional quality of the pattern coupled with the tactile nature of the shag rug occupied my attention for
hours. Every act of play was structured around this one significant element. Using the original rug as a model, I created a romanticized larger-than-life version to provide a setting where the viewer is able to engage with the work from the physical perspective of a child. The piece is fabricated to allow for interaction, which encourages the viewer to sit, lie, and roll around on the 10’x 8’ hand-woven rug.
