There are a bunch of artists doing hollow pate de verre to great effect. Google Kimiake Higuchi and Deborah Horrell. Higuchi does the most amazing vessels with floral imagery. She uses flowers from her garden and multi part molds that are meticulously painted with glass powder. Horrell's work has that beautiful crystaline sugar look that I like so much. I think she needs to hit the precise temperature mark to achieve this effect. Too hot and it goes solid and too cold and it falls apart. I was hoping to do some vessel forms in RP that are sort of a cross between the Greek column extrusions I'm making as jewelry and a little in the direction of Horrell's work.

My other alternative is to rp the vessel form in plastic and then rubber mold that, cast wax into that mold, then invest the wax in plaster and steam out the wax and add the glass. I could also rp the mold and perhaps use a rubber casting from that to invest in plaster.

Have they worked with other sorts of glass? The recycled soda lime glass has a nice look, but there are so many beautiful colors out there. Perhaps these need to be achieved with secondary firings.

No, I altered an arbor press from Harbor Freight and built in brackets to hold both parts of the mold. This are one other are the first 2 part molds I've done in the graphite. The results for this one lost some definition and didn't live up to my expectations. Perhaps vacuum assist would have helped. To me, it's one of the challenges of all the CAD software. The renderings look so slick that one can easily loose sight of what the tangible forms will be. That said, in a lot of cases, the graphite has made some very exciting results for me.

You can seem some short video on my website of the press in action as well as photos of the actual molds and the jewelry that has come out of them. DonaldFriedlich.com
