Double Wedding Ring is a large neckpiece made from wedding dress silk from a first marriage, outlined in hundreds of tiny freshwater pearls. Rod-shaped rare earth magnets sewn inside the outer seams create a tension within, providing a flexible skeleton and weight to the piece that allows it to mold to the body of the wearer.

The powerful shape is derived from the double wedding ring quilt that was often given as a wedding gift. It is constructed using a hand sewing technique I have developed from the traditional English Paper Piecing style of quilt making that was invented in the 1800s as a way of preserving the scraps of valuable silk and velvet left over from dressmaking.

This work is an experiment in transforming memories and reclaiming power. It questions how our perception of value is altered by context and materials. The meditative quality evoked when making an object by hand resonates when the piece is worn.

Really beautiful piece!  I love how it drapes on the body and how important the materials are to the idea.  Exceptional!!
