The Murder Weapon is a Rosary, a perfect metaphor, as well as a perfect symbol. A Rosary symbolizes the sentiment of not doing harm to others, so naturally I created a false bottom on the cross that opens to reveal sharp needles hidden inside. I chose pearls because they represent faith, honesty, purity, and innocence, exactly what Cardillac was thought have been. In Hoffmann’s story, there is a foreshadowing quote that Mademoiselle de Scudery says, “I cannot imagine how honest Master Rene, the model of a good, pious citizen, should have anything to do with such a damnable evil” (Hoffmann, 39).
