PARTICIPATORY SPORT FOR CRAFT ARTISTS
My Gramophone is the distillation of several interests I have been pursuing in my art making/design practice. Nature and natural phenomena. As a sculptor my work is influenced by nature and many of my pieces reflect this interest.
The premise of my work is that Nature holds many clues for our very survival and can be looked at as a divine. My sculptures bridge craft and digital media in an organic fashion. I enjoy using wood, metals, leather, and other organic materials and juxtaposing them with another material that creates a conversation. I believe the Gramophone does just that.
My sculptures have been shown at in Museums and currently I have a piece that I collaborated with another artist, Donald Fortescue called Sounding. The Soundings piece is part of a digital craft show titled. The New Materiality: Digital Dialogues at the Boundaries of Contemporary Craft and is a wonderful combination of sound, art and nature.
As an artist I am drawn to beautiful objects. Our natural world is really a template for all color, form and ideas. The eminent German biologist and naturalist, Ernst Haeckel has brought this to life with his drawings. After seeing his book, Art Forms in Nature I was influenced to make several pieces including the Gramophone. All of which are activated through the use of audio.The Horn is a nice form and perfect for enhancing sound. The shape also directs sound. This became one of the best features of my Gramophone.
I discovered that a sound projected through a horn can create a sound environment. One can use the phone and have an intimate experience with sound while not overpowering the surrounding area. Imagine sitting at ones desk and wanting to listen to some music, while someone else within earshot is not disturbed.
Last, The idea of plugged in and unplugged at the same time is of interest to me. Plugged into technology with the iPhone. With a nod to the past and the beauty of pure form and visible function as in the Victrola. A perfect marriage of craft and technology.
