blown, coldworked glass

Jon Goldberg's journey as a glass artist has been circuitous but rewarding. He attended a liberal arts college, studying photography. Becoming a computer consultant after college, Goldberg never imagined himself as an artist, much less one working in a medium as unique as glass.
He had his first experience with glass art in the late 1990s when a gallery opened across the street from his condo in Philadelphia. The gallery specialized in art from the Studio Glass movement, and Goldberg was fascinated by the variety and expressiveness of the work. When the curator of the gallery mentioned a local hot shop was offering classes, he signed up for eight weeks of evening classes. That first class turned into a second class and after many more classes, he 'graduated' and began taking weeklong intensive workshops at the Studio at the Corning Museum of Glass. As his skill developed, Goldberg studied with artists whose work had a particular resonance with him or who were masters in specific techniques that he wanted to learn.
Glassblowing provided a counterbalance to the abstract thought needed for computer consulting. The objects created were real rather than virtual, and there's no obsolescence in the world of glass art. While working with computers was gratifying, there was frustration with seeing the results of years of work being abandoned solely because of technology's forward march.
What had once served as a diversion from the day job quickly became a focal point for a creative energy he never realized he had. In 2006, Goldberg founded a public-access glassblowing studio, East Falls Glassworks, which has grown to be a focal point of the Philadelphia glass community. The studio continues to be a place where many glass artists create their work and learn from each other. It also makes glass accessible for the greater community through classes and public demonstrations.
