Interdisciplinary. Community. Advocacy. Humor.
I love Mervyn Peake's fantastical novels about the decay of a moribund society, "Titus Groan", "Gormenghast" and "Titus Alone" and to celebrate what would have been his 100th birthday, I created this piece for one of the key characters in the books, Sepulchrave, the 76th Earl of Groan, a deeply disturbed man who becomes convinced that he is an owl...
The "owl skull" in this piece is a fantastic piece of polymer clay work by Dee Wilder and the catch features a piece of petrified palm wood cut for me by Mark Dow. The main body of the pendant is cut from corroded iron plate from a box found in a derelict garage and the key is one from my massive collection of rusting keys, the provenance of which I have forgotten.
Set with zircons, garnet, citrine, peridot and natural quartz "lenses". Other metals used include pure iron sheet, steel wires, silver, fine silver, 9ct gold, and acrylic enamels.
Though it may not look like it, much of this was designed using the CAD package, Rhino 4 and Inkscape.
