PARTICIPATORY SPORT FOR CRAFT ARTISTS

Martin Blank, who holds a BFA from RISD, is a Seattle based artist who began his career in the Chihuly studio in 1984 making “poetic interpretations of the human form”. Now famous for his own elegant sculpture, which often evokes the “deep rhythms of the human landscape”, Blank is making his debut with the gallery. Having just completed a monumental installation for the exterior “moat” of the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, WA, which can be enjoyed through a recently published catalogue entitled Creating Fluent Steps, Blank notes he is “an intuitive artist. I work on the way forms relate to each other to cut a line in space that flows, turns and carries the eye around the piece. The forms reveal a negative space that is as vital and potent as the actual objects. My sculptural work is as much about the void as the mass.” On view in the gallery, Blank’s Lotus Series represents growth and evolution symbolizing the ability to persevere and blossom beyond the muddy waters. Lush yet peaceful, they represent an abstractly floral sensibility. Blank’s work can be found in permanent public installations and private and museum collections worldwide.
