Artist Statement:
A missed connection is an occurrence where two or more people are unable to exchange contact information. This could be the result of a chance glance on the subway or two passersby on the street.
When I first saw the Missed Connections section of the Craigslist website, where people post, in essence, want ads for people that have caught their eye, I was hooked. It’s better than a novel- the whole story is summed up in 2-3 sentences and so much unspoken is conveyed. It seemed to me like a modern day message in a bottle, something thrown out to sea with no expectation of response.
For me, this conjures images of an urban landscape littered with unnecessarily cluttered telephone wires jumbled, disconnected, wrapped around poles, snaking overhead. In this piece I wanted to depict our movement away from an increasingly outmoded form of communication by depicting telephone wires crisscrossing and tangling with ends left unconnected.
