It's strange but much of my work seems to come out that way. There's a figure in the V&A Glass gallery that is extremely ghostly.I think it has something to do with the implied fragility of the material and the way that it holds the light. Also I suppose there is some connection between sleep and the after-life also the feeling that the spirit can travel in sleep whilst the body remains somehow suspended in time. I'm doing another version for a traveling exhibition with The Scottish Glass Society called Migrate where I'll be using a subtle pattern like birds in flight on the surface of the fabric. I'll post it up when it's finished.

It's quite planned in the sense that I have to make a mould that goes in the kiln. I place a large sheet of glass over the mould so that it takes up the form (but how much depends on the heat!)
The spontaneous bit comes in how the fabric is draped over the body. It is a cast taken from my ex girlfriend who liked to sleep a lot. So its a kind of tribute to her I suppose.
I only had about half an hour to capture the form before it became unbearable for her so I had to work fast. No...it wasn't the reason we split up!
