This miniature replica of a public Viennese trash can is part of a series that addresses the intersection of the souvenir, identity and our understanding of 'place' through the format of jewelry. Many souvenirs have historically taken the form of jewelry as an intimate reminder of an experience, either of our own or through the presentation of gifts. The pieces in this series are precious, portable signifiers of places to me; places with which I developed a relationship and are particular and special despite what may sometimes appear to be banal objects. If the trash pod serves as a signifier of a Viennese street where I temporarily resided, what aspects of that identity do I take on when incorporating that form into my public presentation of self?
