Wondering...Can HANDMADE items ever be too perfect???

Posted on March 14, 2012 at 12:35am 3 Comments

It's easy to enjoy a well crafted piece of jewelry... the way it feels on your skin, the perfectly balanced shapes, the flow of the design.  Or the way the light reflects in that, one of a kind stone...you know...the stone that the metalsmith picked out 3 years ago at Tucson and has been saving it for the right design!!  I am always striving to make my work "better".  But I realized the other day..."better" and "perfect" are…

Flowers from trash...

Gotta love Christmas and the EWM "empty wallet syndrome" that comes along with it!  I ran across this video and although it's a tad bit crafty...I found his "recycles flowers" very pretty...and free!!!   Maybe my kids will make grandma  a bouquet for Christmas!!???

Non wearable jewelry...???

Posted on June 12, 2011 at 4:16am 9 Comments

I have often wondered...How does one go about selling "jewelry" made out of paper or other fragile materials???  I absolutely love the look of handmade or specialty paper...and have combined it with some of my metalwork in the past...but it definitely takes a "special" buyer to actually purchase…

Thanks Aimee!  All the metal work is either fabricated from cast elements, which I solder together like a jigsaw puzzle, or hand pierced. I really enjoy piercing - I find it very relaxing.  The colored felt part of the bangles was laser cut and then slotted into the sterling wrist band.

A modern metalsmith/metal artist can be found working in traditional metals as well as in nontraditional materials. The designs can range from the classic to the extravagant, and the techniques can either be centuries old or decidedly current.

The wide range of expression preferences, design options, materials, and processes has lead within our field to unfavorable misconceptions, misunderstandings and in some cases even outright disdain between artists. Can the metal and jewelry field overcome its division and send out a much-needed signal?

We appreciate and respect our historical past and acknowledge that current materials have a rightful place in jewelry/object making!

Arriving at this message is the goal of this traveling exhibition opening at the SNAG conference in Boston 2015, Velvet da Vinci, San Francisco, CA - Aug 19 - Sept 20, 2015, Equinox Gallery, San Antonio, TX - Oct 16 - Nov 15, 2015, Baltimore Jewelry Center, Baltimore, MD - Dec 11, 2015 - Jan 08, 2016, Brooklyn Metal Works, Brooklyn, NY - Feb 5 - Mar 4, 2016, Thomas Mann's Gallery I/O April 1 - June 25, 2016.

Behind the Brooch part 2

I am happy to share with all of you more images of wonderful brooches from artists around the word. I had so many submissions on my first call that I had to create a second part exhibition. This exhibition focuses on a side of the brooch we usually do not pay much attention to: the back side. Our first look is naturally always trained at the front, but when we do take the time to look at the back of a brooch, it will oftentimes reveal a surprising aspect for us, a delightful little secret.
