Behind the Brooch

This exhibition focuses on a side of the brooch we usually do not pay much attention to: the back side. Our first look is naturally always trained at the front, but when we do take the time to look at the back of a brooch, it will oftentimes reveal a surprising aspect for us, a delightful little secret. With this exhibition, I would like to let you in on that secret, something that typically only the maker and the wearer know about. I hope you will enjoy with me this selection of brooches by…See More

Scrounge

Scrounging for materials and tools is a central part of my studio practice, and there are great bargains to be found!  In the past year, I’ve purchased a nice amount of silver for about $2/ounce, received several pounds of enamels, and refurbished hundreds of rusty chasing tools.  Luck has a lot of influence, and the generosity of donors cannot be understated, but there are also strategies involved to help make oneself luckier as well. This blog will also promote recycling and reusing by…See More

Hey Claudia,

Yes, it was great spending some time with you in Salida. I do like it up there as well. It's probably good that you couldn't find my address (it isn't listed on my website) because I ended up buying a container of it at the Naja when I was doing the next workshop at their school. I figured it was right next door, it was cheap, and I could pack it in my bag so no shipping costs. It ended up being cheaper than the shipping charges likely would have been alone. Still I very much appreciate that you would have sent me some! If you can find your source for stretchy tape I would appreciate that.

It's time to start chasing in the studio. Take care.

Hi Claudia, Thank you so much for your comments on my book. I enjoyed looking at your work - Teatime in Wonderland is great. It's wonderful to share this passion for chasing and repousse.

SNAG Toronto part 3

I come from a very different background than most at the conference. I apprenticed with a self taught flutemaker. After 3 years, the only CV I left with was a flute I made that got me hired by a Boston company. I designed my own flute from experience and imagination. To this day my work has always been my only resume. At the SNAG conference almost everyone had a college degree in the arts. Whenever a speaker was introduced, their education highlights were listed along with the schools they were…See More
