I delight in the magical surrealism of reality in nature. My designs are informed by studies of entomology, and life sciences, as well as experiences while living in the tropics and the desert. I savor researching and revisiting the realm of anomalous plants and animals. With this comes the humble reminder that we are just one species in a multitude of interdependent creatures. We are defined as human beings by our need to create personal adornment and art. I feel a connection to a continuum of artisans as I pursue the possibilities that emerge from within me.
As a fiber artist now working with metal; I find that after 30 years, I am still striving to turn straw into gold. The textile patterns and textures fixed into the metal evoke memories of the traditional textiles and basketry encountered while living abroad. Translating fiber techniques into silver, gold and copper continues to fascinate me. With a weaver’s eye for color, I explore the processes of applying patinas and enamels, as well as incorporating gemstones and beads into my work.
In the solitude of my studio, I lose myself in time through detailed labor-intensive and historical processes. As I meld my lifelong interests, I endeavor to create exquisite and timeless pieces of jewelry and sculpture. This counterbalances the often irresolvable challenges encountered in my daily life. With passion and joy, I continue to push my own limits as well as the limits of the techniques and materials.

I am totally thrilled and gratified about being chosen for this scholarship!!! I have been awarded a class of my choice at the renowned Revere Academy in San Francisco as well as my transportation and lodging. I have chosen to take Fabrication 6: Individual Projects where I can work one-on-one with Alan Revere. I would like to add movement to my bug brooches, such as wings and legs that move. I will investigate hinges and mechanisms to make this happen. WHAT…

anne havel said… lucky girl, getting pointers from alan. i enjoy piercing. the only thing i wish i could do more perfectly, is the absolute straight line. i do well, but not good enough. i do not enjoy filing, because of my eyes, and it really stresses my neck. when i'm done with the piece i'm working on, i'll send a pic. i had to do straight lines throughout almost the entire piece and it resulted in many hours of filing, for both the perfect corners and perfect straight lines. i'm not the type for perfection in my art work. i'm almost anti-thetical in philosophy, but, nevertheless, i decided to plow forward.
i would love to see your moving bug when you complete it. it sounds like a lot of fun. ineed help with all the things you wanted to learn with alan. too bad we don't live closer!

thanks so much for the kind words! i only wish i could have posted a pic of the backs of these pieces also. the amount of piercing i did--yikes! but it's meditative, if you know what i mean. anywho, what have you been up to? i just saw the pic of you and alan revere. lucky girl. in our world, it's like standing mext to johnny depp (wouldn't mind that either!). working on more of my drawing work again. i was thinking the haeckel ocean series might get me into shows, but it is not being well-received, like my drawings are. oh well. so, when do yuo go to hawaii? peace, anne

omg, i am so jealous of you. charity hall does great work. is hawaii just a straight out vacation or a class also?
we will be posting pics of the phoenix location within the next day or 2 through the weekly emails, on the web site, etc. you won't believe this place!! it's unbelievable. i never expected it to be so beautiful. wait and see what i mean in a few days and tell me what you think!
if you don't make it (altho i think you'll find it hard to resist once you see these pics) at least we got to meet in seattle.

i just saw that you won a scholarship to revere. fantastic!! since i make beads i'm entering with some of my bead creations. he is so wonderful to do this for people. so how was the enamelist soc conf?? did you just love it?
