Myself @ Dandy Studio
I am a .... Example: Student, Maker, Educator, etc.
I make outlandish wearable objects that reside somewhere between fashion, art and the craft of jewelry. I push ideas of value, wearability, form and presence. While the roots of this work were a humble reaction to skyrocketing metals prices, the implications are broad. The extravagant qualities in my work seem garish, but they’re purpose is twofold; they draw an audience while simultaneously forcing the wearer to become more conscious of their own body. While the material was originally meant to be an industrial gasket, the simple act of repurposing it as not only art objects but art objects that act as fine jewelry questions traditional ideas of value. My work is visually engaging both on and off the body. And as with any objects meant to be worn, you can only gain the full experience by trying a piece on.

Artist Interviews-Where are you going? Where have you been? How did you get there?

About this blog--As a recent graduate and currently in a one-year residency the question of what’s next and how to get there is always on my mind. For this blog I will be interviewing artists who have taken varying paths and pursued different careers in or out of the arts to see what they are doing now and the steps they took to get there. Special Note--I want this to be a way to share how we are all trying to figure out the paths to what’s next and where to go, not answers or things to do, but…See More

The MFA Guidebook for Studio Artists

This blog is intended as a guide for potential and current MFA students, focusing on those in the craft disciplines. It will primarily focus on tips for prospective students, but will also address the needs of those currently working toward their degrees. By sharing my own experience, articles I find and interviews I conduct, I will work to offer guidance to studio artists who may be nervous to start the journey alone so that they can have the same phenomenal opportunity and experience that I’m…See More

Scrounge

Scrounging for materials and tools is a central part of my studio practice, and there are great bargains to be found!  In the past year, I’ve purchased a nice amount of silver for about $2/ounce, received several pounds of enamels, and refurbished hundreds of rusty chasing tools.  Luck has a lot of influence, and the generosity of donors cannot be understated, but there are also strategies involved to help make oneself luckier as well. This blog will also promote recycling and reusing by…See More

How I got to SFASU ( Part 1 of my SFASU saga)

In my last few posts I briefly mentioned that I had visited Stephen F. Austin State University as a visiting artist and that I was going to be sharing that experience with you. Finally, I’ve gotten around to it. Took me long enough, right? Well, better late than never.                My trip to SFASU was the first time that…See More

8 days since my last post that I had intended to make a weekly habit. Within those 8 days I’ve done a lot. Well, within the first few days I did, anyway. Last Wednesday I left my home in Portland, OR and headed towards sunny and warm Nacogdoches, Texas. Why Nacogdoches? That name sounds made up!Actually, it’s a real place—I’ve been there (see Circular Logic). You did see a piece of mine in the show. I only saw yours via the catalog. I could not make the closing because of my flight time back to Cali. That show was such a good experience. I got to meet Jill and Jessica in Philly and they were so cool.
