This is a video to the final piece being made in preparation of the book release for The True Survivors in April. The eye piece is fabricated out of copper and white bronze, and the mask is cast in ice. I also made the music.

The True Survivors: An Exploration of the Lamellain Material Culture

Since 2009, I have been focusing my work on combining my two disciplines: Jewelry Design and Anthropology. Come May, 2012, I will finally hold a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology as well as a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Jewelry/Metal Design from Buffalo State College.Through the years of work at Buffalo State College, I have written the story of a culture that lies in the future of our society. This is the Lamellain culture. The Lamellain people are the first to establish a state-level society…See More

Profile Information

Where do you live ? City, State and Country
Buffalo, NY
Place of Work ? Example: Studio, College, Gallery, Museum, ...)
Buffalo State College
I am a .... Example: Student, Maker, Educator, etc.
My name is John Harris. I've been a Jewelry student at Buffalo State College for 3 years now, and have been lucky enough to work with some of the best Metalsmiths around. I'm new to the exhibition world when it comes to metal (having only been shown in one exhibition recently at the New York State fair), but have been featured in exhibitions as a stone worker, illustrator, and painter in the past. My website features images of much of my work in metal. I'm also a crafter of masks, having studied under accomplished mask-makers Arick Syzmecki and Andrew Lavin. I enjoy employing my background in Anthropology, which I am a senior of at Buffalo State, to craft unique pieces that delve into the depths of what it is to be human. I have also been the recipient of the Buffalo State College Small Creativity Grant to study the crafts of the Steampunk subculture, in which I utilized my skills in Metalsmithing as well as Anthropology to better understand the work of the Steampunk subculture. I was also recently published as an illustrator for my drawings done during an Anthropological study of a Gothic subculture.

I also take part in audio art, or music. I play bass in the band Thrown to the Wolves, and find it to be a great inspiration to my visual works. Their (our) music is in the media player on this page.

The Mission of Art

"In the heart of the artist is a studio. The soul works constantly there, shuttling between heaven and hell, spirit and matter. Each moment, every sound, vision, taste, smell, and feeling, is a brilliant creation, dynamically colored with emotion and meaning. In reverie, the artist enters the studio of the heart and is awed by the soul's work. The artist then labors to bring these revelations into tangible form. Angels and demons compete to lift the artist's hand."

Photography Lighting Solution

Posted on December 21, 2011 at 9:58pm 2 Comments

I like to take my own photographs of my work, but I always run into a common problem in photography: Lighting. Everything involving the lighting of a piece is important. The type of bulb, the brightness, the distance, and the origin of the light source all play into effect. But often times, the origin and distance of the light source are hardly managable without a more professional set-up...And that means a larger budget. However, I have figured out a quick, easy, and fairly affordable…

Lip Service Magazine: The Steampunk Art of John Harris

Posted on June 1, 2011 at 3:30pm 0 Comments

I was recently the topic of a feature article in Lip Service Magazine where my artwork was shipped down to Las Angeles and photgraphed in a vast desert in California, and was followed by a long interview with a reporter from the magazine. The photographs will be featured in the Fall 2011 Lip Service catalogue. Below is the article from the magazine which is taken from the…

I will put up pics of the Pulley Chair as soon as I can get some pictures taken. It was to big to get it down through those narrow hallways into Bruce's studio; something you jewelery majors probably don't have to worry about. I have to call him and set something up in the wood studio. I need pics of my Human Fan as well. I will get them up asap.
