Crafting this Antipodean Place

Australian landscapes are old, powerful and strange to Eurocentric eyes. To Indigenous Australia, whose pre-colonial history stretches back something like 60,000 years, every part of the landscape was active and spirited, full of story, meaning and relatedness. Contemporary mainstream Australia views the land as a resource to be measured, assessed, and exploited, without agency and devoid of meaning beyond economic value. This exhibition presents the work of Australian craft artists who engage…See More

Statement:
When time in the studio becomes more scarce, the weight of its preciousness can sabotage the creative process. With my most recent body of work, I chose to approach it with a discipline not unlike my meditation practice. Creating a structured schedule filled with quiet rituals allowed for reflection and discovery brought on mostly by patience and repetition. At its best, this practice can lead to the distillation of thought; an intensely fertile ground ready as soon as you find time to engage it.

Ideas that I tucked away for later use coalesced, allowing unexpected intersections and alignments to emerge. The “cosies” and plates, for example, grew out of a project called “Unfinished, Damaged and Broken.” With this fledgling sculpture series, I took found objects and either completed, repaired or protected them. This exploration led to other discoveries involving unexpected interactions between materials, embodied in much of the jewelry you see here.

Hi Kristin - thanks for the friend add - I've been lurking here on Crafthaus for a few years now. Would like to have a discussion with you sometime about the role of ritual in your practice - I am very interested in how crafted objects can create everyday rituals that disrupt the profanity of modern industrial life.
Look forward to the next opportunity to have that conversation In person

Hey Kristin,

Glad to hear that the prelim $$$ for your CoLab project trip came through. Why not? You do good stuff! Remind me where you'll be in Aotearoa (Maori for NZ, but you knew that, right?). I have a few friends there, jewelers, and if you're going to be  anywhere nearby...well you get the picture. Get back to me.

HI Kristin,

I hope you'll send images for "Define Metal and Fiber", check out online exhibitions. Some of your pieces certainly would fit right it.

Thank you. Your work is wonderful. I was reading your statement above. You are so right about the importance of rituals. I also have found they allow the mind and body to move where the spirit needs to go next. Like you, I find this true in my meditation practice. I also use it in my yoga and gardening. In fact, doing the little things in the garden seem to open new awarenesses for me.
My husband and I are working to move to the Seattle area sometime next year. Perhaps, when we are settled, we could have coffee. I hope to drive down often, as well as, attend some workshops at OCAC. Please let us know about workshops you may be holding.

Kristin:

Prompted by the new song you uploaded, I looked at your personal page again while listening to the song. I also re-read your statement and saw the many photos of your work that I hadn't had the time to really look at during the past frenzied weeks.

Aside from telling you how much I enjoy seeing the range of materials you work with, and the amazing results :-)) , I was particularly impressed by your thoughtful and reflective Artist Statement.

I can absolutely relate to your sentiment about studio time sometimes being a rare commodity and how that impedes the creative process in the worst way.

Like you, I have set myself a fairly strict schedule (or ritual) that enables me to spend a certain amount of hours daily in the studio. So far, that has worked well for me. I like being organized in what I do, therefore coming up and sticking to a schedule is the best way for me to go. I appreciate the "piece of mind" which translates into quiet time for me to THINK.

Behind the Brooch part 2

I am happy to share with all of you more images of wonderful brooches from artists around the word. I had so many submissions on my first call that I had to create a second part exhibition. This exhibition focuses on a side of the brooch we usually do not pay much attention to: the back side. Our first look is naturally always trained at the front, but when we do take the time to look at the back of a brooch, it will oftentimes reveal a surprising aspect for us, a delightful little secret. With…See More
