Artist Statement

Objects hang before the eyes of the imagination, continuously re-presenting
ourselves to ourselves, and telling the story of our lives in ways which would
be impossible otherwise

– Susan Pearce

We reflect ourselves in objects for reassurance and protection, escapism and discovery. The terrifying and fearful narratives we invent allow us to feel some sort of control over the world around us and the three dimensional form acts as palpable evidence of these real and imagined tales. My work explores the psychological necessity for narrative structure and how anxieties are sublimated through the mundane and extraordinary.

The absent human is an inherent narrative element of craft objects, I use craft processes as a vehicle to speak of the unknown, the uncanny and the melancholy. Assuming the role of a fraudulent anthropologist, I manipulate the pre-existing to create enigmatic artefacts which toy with our longing to believe in the fantastic. Subverting the authority of environment and the associative power of collection allow me to confuse and construct, evoking a conflict of animistic fears and desires.

Lucy Harvey is a metalsmith artist from Manchester, UK. Since graduating from her MA in Jewellery, Silversmithing & Related Products at Birmingham City University she has been conducting a ceramics residency at Blessed Thomas Holford College, Altrincham, exploring the narrative capacity of craft processes and the uncanny. In late 2009 she will be undertaking a three month artist residency at Aberystwyth Arts Centre, Wales, exploring rural legend and outdoor site-specific installation.

I spend too much time on the internet, I can also be found here for my art practice and musings:

I would love to hear from other makers with warped senses of humour and a preference for the strange. Actually, I'd be quite pleased to hear from anyone.

Hello everyone! Anthropomorphic Body Sculpture - Suggestions please?

The other week I set up a seminar group on the rival place of which we shan't speak it's name and then I found out about Crafthaus which rendered my f*ceb*ok a bit useless really. I also haven't got the time to market it. But anyway!

My quandry and reason for starting a group like that was because I don't get to go to seminar groups anymore and I really miss people giving me suggestions of arti… Continue

Yeah I'll definitely do that. I would like to have workshop space in the future because in this next module I will be introducing some metals. Fingers crossed it will look ok but I really would like to improve and be able to saw pierce without getting an achey arm!! Im such a weakling! Thats really good that you had a good experience. Lets hope we're all back there next year then and our cash flow has improved dramatically, along with the strength of the pound :S. I would love to see what you're working on in the future, the ceramics sound exciting. Will definitely keep in touch! x

Hahaha! What inappropriate comments?? Yeah we have a good group of people, we're lucky we all get on so well! Thankyou very much...I'm hoping I have a market out there somewhere for it! I'm thinking of applying for design space and going it alone...maybe do some part time work as well that pays the bills. Schmuck was a really good experience, different to what I expected. The exciting stuff was what was at the 48 weeks later and James exchange I thought. Schmuck was really good but I'd seen a lot of it on Klimt and preferred the photos on there to the real thing! We're going to try and go to Amsterdam in June I think so I think that will be more my cup of tea! How was it exhibiting in Munich, I really hope we're doing that too in a years time! x

Speak soon! xx
