Olga van der Lans graduated from the SBB art school (Gouda, 2001)
and is a lecturer of Ceramic Design at the Volksuniversiteit Teylingen in
Voorhout.
She is specialized in throwing and decorating porcelain.
The art of throwing porcelain; pressing, squeezing and pulling
clay rotating on a potter’s wheel to form radically symmetric
ceramics, is relatively rare.
"The material is soft and very shapeable, but its viscosity is
quite limited.
Remarkably, porcelain that is shaped on a potter’s wheel has a ‘memory’: during the turning process a bulge or inaccuracy can easily be adjusted, but it will inevitabley return during the baking process."

Van der Lans has developed a delicate and refined style by
combining Art Deco and Jugendstil with oriental influences.
Each work is elegant and unique. “I love throwing porcelain:
white, soft and pure.
The sleek white surface is a great canvas to decorate.”
In decorating van der Lans is particularly inspired by her daily surroundings. Often, when a detail catches her eye, it magnifies and manifests itself to her feeding her inspiration.
“I start with a grid, a surface or a single line and the filling-in comes spontaneously.
The patterns define the decoration, but they also affirm and complete the shape of the object.”
In many of her pieces a sgraffito technique is used. The outlines of a decoration are applied to an object using colored porcelain slip.
After drying the details are scratched in, bringing out the white
porcelain underneath.
By overlaying different lines and motifs she creates both depth and shadows. One work can have a combination of decoration techniques and glazes, each of which needs a
separate firing. Some objects were fired up to five times.

In her Studio46 in The Hague Van der Lans runs workshops in decorating and working with clay.
