Lower Cost investment options

Hey Folks,Due to the obscene shipping cost of casting investment, I'm considering trying to mix up my own using a recipe similar to our sculpture casting investment (Plaster, Silica and some sort of refractory).  Has anyone attempted this?  What sources do you all use for your casting investment? I would like to do this with my students, so I'm looking for a good trade-off between decently clean casts and lower cost.  I've been ordering Kerr Investment from companies like Otto-Frei and…See More

Yeah, I am still negotiating if it will be possible to teach at Touchstone, but things are looking good. I would love to grab a beer when/if I am in PA.

Sean,

The ring you commented on is actually a rendering of something I designed in Rhinoceros (a digital 3DM software). Sorry, no foundry. . .

I don't know if your interested in rapid prototyping but, I will be printing a version of this ring in stainless steel.  I will also be making a low temperature vulcanized mold of this ring that I have printed on an Eden Objet printer in Durus White.  My primary objective is to then cast the ring in sterling silver or gold so that I can tension set Herkimer Diamonds between the "synapse" elements [the ring is inspired by the electrical exchange between neurons].  I'm also going to print one or two extra stainless steel to play with tension setting/capturing various materials within the constraints of printed steel (printed steel has poignantly different characteristics than cast, forged or fabricated steel)

Thank you so much for the encouraging response! Its much appreciated :)

What Have I Been Up To?

Since returning from Istanbul, it has been non-stop in the workshop, preparing work for orders and making some new pieces too. I've sidelined a number of works-in-progress in order to get on with more pressing issues, so there are no updates on my Chanel-inspired piece or my tribute to Alexander McQueen, though I have progressed apace with my first foray into electronics in jewellery, "14th Century Nightlife" which I hope to finish finally this coming week after it sitting on my bench for…See More
