Hello there. So we are in another show together after all these years. It was a fun weekend at the SCC in Pittsburgh. Several of the artists came in for the opening and gallery talks. Just wanted to say that your piece was a standout in a beautiful show. It is expressive and funny, exquisitely crafted and so BLUE! Loved it. Cappy

Great Stephen!

Yes, I have been to Penland, Urban Glass (NYC), The Appalachian Center for Craft and Pilchuck as a glass student, but never to Haystack (which was always a regret because it looks like the seaside shangri-la of craft schools). I look at these school as potential models for Touchstone to emulate, so it would be great to have your board perspective on campus as well as your skills and an artist.

I just started as the ED at Touchstone in July, and my formative experiences at the most prestigious craft schools are influencing how I chart Touchstone's future. That's one reason I was so keen to get in touch with Brigitte at crafthaus. The site has been great way for me to share my own work, and to connect with engaged and talented craft artists to help Touchstone take a more active role in the regional high craft ecology.

Anyway, I have a few dates open from late spring to early fall, weekend and week-long classes, can I email you about this or would you prefer to keep corresponding through crafthaus?

My email address is akenney@touchstonecrafts.org, but I would be happy to touch base with you if you send me your email. Looking forward to working something out.

Thanks Stephen. For a glass artist I really avoid the "glassy" texture in my work. Whether its heavy engraving or metal foils, I always want to distress the surface. I guess I am more interested in translucent vs. transparent. Always jealous of the surfaces that metal workers and ceramicist can get. Does the blue square/rect. tube stock in your work come like that. Are they reclaimed?

On a side, note I am the ED at Touchstone Center for Craft in Farmington, PA. Our Hart Moore Blacksmithing Studio is one of the best in the country. If you are ever interested in teaching a week-long or weekend class I would love to discuss it with you. I am trying to nudge the program towards more contemporary interpretations of blacksmith and your work meets that need.

Welcome Stephen,

These boxes have animated spirits and like something out of Hayao Miyakai's "Howl's Moving Castle", look like they might spring to life.

Hello Stephen,

Welcome to crafthaus, the network for fine craft artists and those who support them! I am very glad you joined us! Your crafthaus membership is valid through December 15, 2012.

Please look around and add your thoughts to the groups, blogs and discussions. Crafthaus is a participatory sport!

Please note that ALL images sent to the website editor are vetted to assure a measure of overall quality control. Unlike other image sharing websites, crafthaus is not a "free-for-all". Our members present their work in front of an educated and critical audience (their peers,) so the photos have to be GREAT. Our goal is to show our members' work in the best possible light. From the many images received daily, we aim to post as many as possible. Crafthaus heartily encourages comments from the membership, however, with regard to photos posted or not, we have a strict "NO WHINING" policy in effect!

If there are ever any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to email me via crafthauseditor@live.com anytime, I will do my best to be of help.

I hope you will enjoy being with this network, and will find the exchanges interesting and fun.

Again: Welcome !

Brigitte Martin

It is that time of year again, when the degree shows in Scotland all kick off. As usual, the roll is started by Dundee's Duncan of Jordanstone College of  Art & Design - DJCAD for short. Regular readers of my blog will know that Dundee is my favourite Scottish city and has been for many, many years, so it is something of a surprise to realise that until last…See More
