Profile Information

Where do you live ? City, State and Country
Detroit MI
Place of Work ? Example: Studio, College, Gallery, Museum, ...)
Detroit Brothers Custom Cycles - College For Creative Studies
I am a .... Example: Student, Maker, Educator, etc.
In my work I strive to keep metal-smithing traditions and techniques of the past alive while also pushing the boundaries of the trade. I draw most inspiration from my surroundings in Detroit. The landscape offers me many opportunities to explore location, scale, and texture through my steel works. I am also highly influenced by the characteristics of artist Albet Paley and Tom Joyce. Their example as makers of ornamental, utilitarian, and expressive objects has set a high precedent that I strive to achieve.

In my most current works I am using the process of inflating steel forms using compressed air. This method has allowed me to explore the expansive qualities of steel. This in depth study has sparked my interest in site-specific installations. Inflating steel forms into existing permanent structures I am hoping to create dialog between the original environments and the object I am imposing into it. Although occasionally hidden or obscure my inflations, for the truly observant, are recognized as integral and dynamic to the overall site. The installation process allows me to redefine and contribute to each site; similar to a graffiti artist, my installation seeks to introduce a meaningful contrast or juxtaposition between art and landscape. Constructing the on site inflations I am challenging the expectations of gallery, public art, and creative process.

Lovely work. If you haven't already- look at John Chamberlain in addition to Paley + Joyce.

nice work. i am drawn to the voluptuousness of your forms while employing a material that is normally resistant.

Call for artists....

"Behind the Brooch"

I have always thought that the back of a jewelry piece is as important as the front. If you feel the same way, consider sending images of the front and backside of your brooches to Lorena Angulo asap. Lorena is looking for images to place in a future crafthaus online exhibition!
