Square Black raku lamp
base is hand-built, textured, raku-fired with copper matte glaze. Shade is black silk with gold foil interior. Finial is an ammonite. This lamp is 23" tall.

- I work at home in my studio full-time. Most of my work is handbuilt and will be raku-fired. I make tiles and some functional pieces, but I really love to raku. I have been doing ceramics for 30 years: I got my start at Brookhaven College in Dallas, Texas. The wonderful instructor, Sweety Bowman (a clay legend), is still my dearest friend. I also like to paint & draw and have dabbled in glass. Right now I am making tiles and also making lamps with a raku base. A few months ago I signed up for a jewelry/metals class at our local college & am having so much fun with this. We learned cold connections first, then how to solder & bezel set stones. Next, we will learn to cast. I am having so much fun & love my new craft. I am an Illinois Artisan and you can find my work at all of the Illinois Artisan Shops thru-out Illinois, also, Cinema Gallery, Urbana, IL, Iowa Artisans, Iowa City, IA, and The Old Court House Arts Center in Woodstock, IL.

Sorry- I caught an exhaustion/respiratory/family Easter festivities/research paper for class cootie... so I'd like to try to sum up NCECA, and maybe what it all meant for me. The theme of this conference was "Independence", celebrating the "independent spirit in all of us" all the while celebrating the traditions associated with the ceramic medium. The daytime program is jammed, sometimes something you want to see is at the same time as another you didn't want to miss & you find yourself…

too tired to write, I will tell more tomorrow...did "First Friday" with Robin Hopper that included dinner in a Turkish Restaurant complete with belly dancing (not us or Robin). Big dance tonite, but the day was filled with greatness. Our heads are about to officially explode.

We started out well, seeing Isaiah Zagar speak about his mosaics at 8 am, manage to squeeze in a little shopping at the commercial exhibits because we can't live without a new tool, brush, etc, hoping for some free samples...I see my teapots, bowl, etc at the Amaco booth - I've helped them introduce a fab new ^5/6 glaze called Palladium. Greetings from NCECA - Day 1

Arrived just in time to dump my bags & head over to the conference headquarters for a quick check-in, where I received my official NCECA badge & bag of conference materials. We grabbed our shuttle bus & we were off on the Route 2 tour - Center City, University City & South Philly. There are an amazing amount of ceramic shows here for NCECA. I am almost packed. My flight leaves ORD at 8:45am; I arrive in Philadelphia at 11:45am. I plan to dash to my hotel, dump my luggage, then go immediately to the conference headquarters so I can try to jump on a "continuous shuttle bus tour #2" to catch as many galleries & exhibits as I can. Exhibition coverage will be balanced with tips on how to strategically build a legacy over a length of time, in a way that makes sense to your individual goals as an artist and maker.

A show at Crafthaus has more of an audience then a gallery and offers a permanent stage to the world. We do love gallery shows, but at Crafthaus submission is easy, doesn't cost anything for members. In addition to our calls there are others you may be interested in.
