"Every year Jewels in Ferment aims to gather the infinitely individual expressions of contemporary jewellery makers in relation to popular themes: wine and territories, looking at this terroir as an ensemble of deep-rooted cultural values and elements.

This 4th edition of Gioielli in Fermento consists of a competition and exhibition of unique pieces of jewellery inspired by a specific theme. The theme this year concerns the world of colours as the main concept at the heart of contemporary jewellery, a means of expressing all degrees of intensity, almost a metaphor for all added value and meaning; like the 'colour' a composer uses in instructing performers on how to play a piece of music.

Colour becomes an instrument of individual expression, both material and immaterial, a way to commit to the pieces of Jewels in Ferment a link between each story and a broader identification of that Mediterranean accent the culture of wine and our territories".

Using new technology RCA students of Goldsmithing, Silversmithing, Metalwork & Jewellery present their experimentations under Silvia Weidenbach's guidance. All work for this exhibition was created by employing haptic arm and 3D printing. I saw Weidenbach's exquisite and detailed work last year at Jerwood Makers Open 2012.

My favourite from the students' jewellery was Sofia Winberg's necklace because of the quality of the product but mainly because behind that there is a thoughtful and thorough research.

The Goldsmiths' Centre organised also a talk for this exhibition, 'Behind the Curtain' event where speakers included Weidenbach, a few of the students and rapid prototyping technicians explaining the implementation of the haptic arm in jewellery design and making. At the end of the talk there was a demonstration and the opportunity for visitors to try using the haptic arm. It feels so different from sketching on paper and even from illustrating designs using Adobe Illustrator but apparently this is the future of contemporary jewellery. Jewellery design and jewellery making in a virtual reality.

Eindhoven-based designers Formafantasma exhibit four bodies of their work: Craftica, Botanica, Colony and Moulding Tradition. In their Craftica collection they pay "homage to leather". Working with discarded off-cuts and discarded skins from the food industry they investigate the diversity and origins of leather through a collection of beautifully handcrafted lights, stools and vessels. In Formafantasma's Moulding Tradition "there is a series of stripped down ceramic vessels that have been informed by the ongoing Sicilian ceramic tradition of "teste di moro", copies of the 17th century vases from the Caltagirone region of Sicily that portray a grotesque Moorish face".

Above all in their work there is superb design, attention to detail and fine time-honoured techniques.

I particularly like the latter as we've been offered as visitors an insight of the methodology and approach to design by each exhibitor. There is next to each exhibit an object, a photo or something, which was related to making of the piece and a short questionnaire for each artist.

It is an inspiring exhibition showing "beautiful, thought provoking objects" and it is still on till January 12th.
