ECU Symposium

What a weekend! We had our long awaited symposium "Material Topics" this weekend. We had metals students from University, Appalachian State, Winthrop, VCU, and even someone from SCAD. Of course there were a ton of ECU people, even some from outside the metals department. We even had alumni and some community members from outside the university. I think our final count was up around 100 people!

The whole thing kicked off Friday night with an opening for a fantastic show between ECU… Continue

Looks a lot like the Matrix...

Sure it does, but I really question the foresight of the Matrix developers when they created the iconic scrolling text. The best thing about my job is the ability to work on various cutting edge projects, whether for an entrepreneur or another research institution. Recently I was given the task of developing a virtual and physical model of the data you see …

Timing is Everything

Before my current work and research into CAD and Rapid Manufacturing all of my time was devoted to hollowware and large scale sculpture. I am a certified ASME welder and offered such services as casting bronze and precision TIG stainless steel welding.

Here is an example of public work I fabricated. This is an memorial piece for the local Rotary International group of Sodus, NY. The memorial will have plaques of past Rotary members that have… Continue

What do I mean by success

How I define success has changed as the years have gone by, but here are the signposts of my various definitions of success:

1. My craft supports me and my family (college cost for kids, mortgage, food, etc.).

2. My craft supports my creative urges.

3. I can make, via skills and techniques, whatever my creativity insists that I make.

4. My work (jewels) is enjoyed and WORN by my collectors.

5. My work pleases and inspires me.

6. My work keeps me young!

7. My… Continue

I am having the hardest time with this word...goldsmith!

I recently read ...(twice actually, in different publication) that you can be a goldsmith even if you don't use gold. (Art Jewelry magazine, January 2010 issue, page 20) What????????????????????? That is crazy. I know a silversmith works with large silver pieces...bowls, tea sets and decorative items and so on. Since I only work with gold a bit and silver is a big part of my work... I don't really consider myself a goldsmith.

Also...when I googeled(sp?) it...an on-line dictionary (… Continue

I think I need an Exorcist...

As a formerly trained artist/craftsman I sort of sold my soul to seek a living in the commercial realm of jewelry manufacturing- It is an awesome industry filled with talent, genius and a large number of dirt bags to say the least.

I feel blessed as I have always been allowed to express my opinions on purity in design, conceptual constructivism and "real" high craft craftsmanship.

Just the other day I engaged in a pretty benign conversation on another board focused on the… Continue

Quiet as a Bird

I found this dead bird the other day and couldn't resist picking him (don't know the gender, thought of him as a he) up to draw in the park. It was the most surreal moment. I had been sketching ideas for a bird pendant as I have been feeling very 'fertile' lately and wanted to do a piece with eggs. I had been thinking about ways to research birds as they are hard to view in the wild, when I saw this bird lying next to Brampton City Hall. It had obviously died recently and I pondered whether it… Continue

New Life, New Blog

Now that I am a full time artist and am not in school I have decided to post my research, experiences and goings on in relation to my art, design, photography, jewellery etc on here, for you the people. I have always enjoyed researching but found it a nuisance to organize my research in a way that teachers, professors, and academics in general could follow my thought process. Now that I am 'free' I am finding myself wanting to record my research in a way that the public…you….can enjoy it. So if… Continue
