Leo Sewell: Junk Sculptor Part 2

I would understand, from their viewpoint, because they lived through the depression, that they appreciated a certain aspect of your work which is that you create something out of objects that are just lying around…recreating and using what is already there, you aren’t being wasteful. You're an idiot, thanks for asking

There's an old expression, "too clever by half".

Here is one permutation of that in real time.

We woke up yesterday, checked on our Etsy store, and there was a sale

from one Rhonda Ryan. Hurray. Nice way to start the day. Or so we

thought.

Checking with Paypal revealed no payment, but this could mean all kinds

of things. so we wrote:

"Hi Rhonda,

We have received your Etsy order for the 2Roses…

Las Vegas Jewelry Week 2010

Rolling down the Las Vegas strip at 10pm on a Friday night and it’s a solid 98° outside. We’ve been here before. Its going to be jewelry/hell week in Vegas. Saturday does not disappoint as the temperature rockets to 110° by mid-morning.

Ok, the shows are in nice air-conditioned casinos, so we’ll only have to fire-walk from show to show. We mention the weather as one possible reason for the noticeably light crowds in town. Having been to… Continue

Teaching in England in August

Hi everyone, I'm going to be teaching at West Dean south of London near Chichester in August this year. The class is not full and I would love to increase enrollment. I'm teaching chasing and repousse and will be bringing a few copies of my book, "Chasing and Repousse: Methods Ancient and Modern" along. This address should bring you right to the… Continue

Earrings to Shut My Mother-In-Law Up

"Why don't you make nice jewelry that normal people can wear?" My mother-in-law is generally a sweet person, but our jewelry seriously disrupts the balance of her universe. We don't have the heart to let her

know that we actually find this amusing. Instead we made these, as a sort of offering/sacrifice. Unfortunately, we did not anticipate the law of unintended consequences, as this gesture simply reinforced her…

Pricing - how, when, why

recent musings.....i have been engaged most recently in repricing all of my work. i have given careful thought to this over the past couple of months & have come to realize that, in some cases, i was actually sellling my work at wholesale prices (or very close to it). so.....after some research (thanks, thomas mann), i have repriced every single item in my inventory. result - the retail price of most items has increased, from just a few dollars to as much as 30%, which is huge. those pieces… Continue

The Back Story

One of the cool things about handmade items is that there is almost always a story behind the piece. Take this pendant, for example. It’s made of Biggs Jasper, which comes from Oregon. We have been prospectors and rockhounds for many decades, and collected the rough used in this pendant in the late 1970’s. You generally have to get pretty far off the trail to find anything good when you’re…

Silver Cats Save Cats

The OSPCA (Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) had plans to euthanize 350 animals, but only 99 have been put down due to 'combined voices of animal welfare advocates' (from the Toronto Humane Society Article), and many people are raising money, and there is even a…

OCAC Annual Jewelry Sale!!!

Every year, the Oregon College of Art and Craft's Metals Department holds a jewelry sale to raise funds for their Visiting Artist Fund. This money goes towards bringing in a visiting artist to teach a weekend workshop to students at the school. It is also great exposure for students and alumni, as well as a fantastic place to find great gifts for yourself or others at very very good prices.
