A Quiet Month - Not So Quiet Month

A fairly quiet month, May... towards the end of the submission period for the students, followed by the assessments, then graduate shows.

"Talking Practice" at the School of Jewellery with alumnus, Peter Taylor of the Goldsmiths' Centre who is being given an honorary doctorate by the University. I've known Peter for years and it was great to hear him talking about his surprising route from bench…

Kingdom Come

I've been a huge fan of JG Ballard ever since I read "High Rise" when I was about 16. I rapidly explored "Crash" and "Atrocity Exhibition" - which, at 16 or 17, I probably pretentiously pretended to understand: as an…

Summer's Gone...

...and I'm back at work.

Summer kicked off with a new car:

Yes. I bought a 2-seater Smart Car! It is SO good. We were all over the country this summer and unlike the old car, the…

Goodbye Rotten

But before I get to that title, what has been going on?

I find myself so busy these days - now that I'm Programme Leader for the HND Jewellery at the School - that I keep forgetting to update on what has been happening!

The Heat Is On

Last week I was in London at 34 degrees, speaking at the Goldsmiths Centre as part of the ACJ's touring "20:20 Visions" exhibition, celebrating 20 famous jewellers who have been members of the ACJ as well as 20 current members who are active…

Preparations

Graduate Show 2017 Preparations - 2

A short hiatus in posts recently which is not that there's been nothing going on, more that it hasn't been anything major and I've actually been too busy to get time together to write. SO a longer post with a lot of…

A Hairy Week!

Bharti Parmar - 2

That was a week so jammed with things to do that I'm still reeling. It all started on Tuesday evening when I had three different, sequential events to go to, first of these being one of the School of Jewellery's intermittent lecture…

Seismic!

Trajet - 1

Not much to report this week, except that I've been to a couple of excellent concerts. The first up was "Trajet" at St. Phillip's Cathedral in the city centre, a piece for solo 'cello which was written from seismic recordings taken of filled-in…

Quiet Life

Jewellery Quarter Dawn

A very quiet week for me this week, punctuated by a visit from Marcy of the British Art Medal Society to discuss next year's student medal competition, doing my tax return and getting locked out of the School early one morning (due to…

Ommisions!

How could I forget?

In my last post, I completely forgot to note that I'd also taken a trip to the New Ashgate Gallery in Farnham for the opening of the ACJ "Choice!" show there on the Friday night. This is the 2016 edition of the annual show of work by members and we were…

Glass, Music and More

A shortish post, despite a busy week with the (almost) full compliment of staff back at the School of Jewellery and preparing for the new intake of students. I can't quite believe that it is a whole year since I started there. What a whirlwind!

I have written before of my friend, Carrie Fertig (…

Head In The Sand

Courgette Fashion

As Britain crashes into economic disaster and global irrelevance and we swing ever-more towards a state of fascism, I've been burying my head in the sand and thinking about rather less grim things, like working on my piece for Boris Bally's show, about which I wrote a week or so back.

This week was also fairly tough in that we had been…

No Future

While it is absolutely not the case that everyone who voted to leave the EU is a racist - far from it, I would think - the language of the 'campaign' to leave certainly was racist. Who can forget Farage's appalling poster which shows Syrian refugees leaving their country:…

We're all included on…

His Satanic Majesty

Regular followers of this blog will be aware of my republican views and that I find the concept of a monarchy not only outdated but offensive to any sense of democracy or egalitarianism. Cake-maker extraordinaire, Claire Price (standing,…

Rhubarb Filling

Not much to report this week, so I'll digress on the new garden in Birmingham, for where I have been struggling to find that most proasic of vegetables (fruits, I suppose): rhubarb. I have always thought I hated rhubarb but one day a few months back, my colleague, Claire Price, brought in a jar of jam for us to eat at one of our regular staff breakfasts. I tucked in without giving it much thought and marvelled at the balance of sour and sweet, at the hint of orange, at the amazing scent. It…

Build-up

Just 'Cos - 3

This week has been taken up with the tough paperwork exercises of re-writing the whole curriculum at the School of Jewellery to make it more dynamic and flexible. We've taken the opportunity to make the whole thing more craft-based, which is…
