California Dreaming

Just back to a cloudy, damp, icy cold day in Glasgow, having boarded the plane from San Francisco at 18 degrees C and brilliant sun. The air there was clear, here it is fugged with tobacco smoke. Everyone looks miserable. I look miserable. I have to get to work before 4pm for a meeting with the college Prinicpal at which he told us about financial cuts to the education sector. Not a great return from what was an amazing four days on the East Coast of the USA...

I am not really sure…

The Art of Repairing

Redesigning, remaking and recycling are all values that formulate the creative process of up cycling. "Fix, Fix, Fix is an exploration of the art of self-effacement. It includes curated objects, made outside of an art context by self-taught and professional repairers, alongside commissioned works by artists who have been asked to respond to the exhibition theme". Exhibiting artists include Arlington Conservation, David Clarke, Leo Fitzmaurice, Fixperts, Alice Kettle, Laura McGrath, Jasleen…

Coco's Channel Set

I've never channel-set round stones until today...

Coco's Cogs - WIP - 16

I'm genuinely surprised that it is easier than channel setting square stones, which I have done before on many occasions. I had always imagined that the round stones - not fitting so squarely into the channel - would rock about, but they don't. The problem…

Inness Thomson

One of my students, Inness Thomson, though only part of the way through his course, has just opened his first small show at Scotland Art.Com, a gallery in the centre of glasgow. As you can understand, he is justifiably proud:

I especially like his silver and…

Materials Hard & Soft - Juror's Award

I am pleased to announce that my piece, Attic Turbine Vent (shoulder brooch) was selected as one of ten pieces in this year's exhibition for a Juror's Award. Materials Hard & Soft is a competitive, national exhibition now in its twenty-sixth year. This year's juror was Jean W. McLaughlin, Executive Director of the Penland School of Craft. 568 pieces were submitted and 71 chosen for inclusion with 10 juror's awards given. I am also pleased to say that a number…

Ishbel and Iain

Two of my ex-students had a little Christmas preview of their new work tonight. For some very odd reason, it was held in a hi-fi shop... quite a strange location but the specialist hushed acoustics made for a really lovely feel to the show.

Ishbel Watson has been working on some new work based on Fritz Lang's "Metropolis":

SOFA Day 3 - Saturday, November 3rd

By Saturday, I had the programme sorted: I wanted to hear the talk about "Mr Imagination" at 4pm, had to meet a friend for lunch at 1pm and knew that I wanted to see a bit more of the city and the amazing architecture of the place.

A Century Of Architecture

One of the things I love about American city architecture is the way that…

SOFA Chicago, Day 2

Day 2 - Friday 2nd November

An early start for me today as I wanted to have a look around the area around the hotel, Chicago's "Magnificent Mile" of very expensive brand-name shops. The first people I encountered were these unlikely fellows:

Chancers!

Chicago has a LOT of homelessness and I was particularly…

Just got back from the Windy City... SNAG at SOFA Chicago

As I normally say 'no' to Doris Day stereotypes, I apologise for the obvious title to this post!

It is, however, true. I have just arrived home from the thrilling three-day excursion to Chicago for SOFA 2012. It was brilliant, and not at all windy. I am still trying to process it all and the to get round to emailing all the people I need to talk to.…

Cut in Clerkenwell - Pittsburgh 2012

Although it is almost a week since the event - I've been travelling and am now in Pittsburgh - I really should write up an exciting event I attended on Monday last week in London, "Cut In Clerkenwell" which is an exhibition at Craft Central by the Hand Engravers' Association in the UK, a most worthy body who have a highly talented and esteemed membership - including…

Exhibition Opportunity: Hot Under the Collar

Hot Under the Collar: A Survey of Contemporary Necklaces

Choker, collar, lariat, torque, pendant, the necklace is one of the most diverse formats available to metalsmiths today. Whether cascading down the front, or draped down the back, the possibilities are nearly endless. The human torso provides us with one of our largest canvases, while still keeping body as site.

From comments on the classic strand…

"Art by Attrition"

If you'll be in Seattle for SNAG, I hope you'll check out the show "Art by Attrition" at Kobo Gallery at Higo.

Curated by Julia Harrison, the show features pieces made by artists who use subtractive or reductive techniques to produce their forms.  "Subtractive processes have a particular dynamic.  When using these techniques, all of the material that an artist will have to work with is present from the beginning and, once removed, cannot be replaced.  This exhibition will call attention…

The Kiss - A Forest

I've been planning my entry for BJ Johnson's call for pieces based on inspirations from the works of The Cure. Since I first read about this exhibition, I've been planning what to make and have ended up going with my initial feelings that I should work with the initial idea I had after reading the proposal: to make a piece around "A Forest", their 1980 single and a song which, for me, encapsulates their…
