Spring At Last

City Gate

Since my last post, spring can definitely be said to have arrived and the Easter break saw sunshine all day and every day except the last. It is great to be seeing the sky still slightly light at 9pm and to feel the warmth in the…

Fashion:Victim

Fashion:Victim - In Memoriam ALMcQ - 86

I have finally finished my Alexander McQueen tribute piece, "Fashion:Victim" which comprises of the two spherical 'handbags' made from steel spheres which I found in a burnt-out factory in Kent some years ago. The…

Hero Worship

GRIMA - 1

My first real awareness of "contemporary jewellery" came when I worked for John Gilchrist in his small workshop in Bothwell, the Lanarkshire village where I spent most…

March Onwards

Ten30 Harris Tweed "Salmon" Peacoat - 2

Another two weeks has passed since my last entry. I envy those people who manage to make time to blog regularly and always feel slightly guilty when I realise that I've not posted for a week,…

A Peep Of Spring

Pinhole Spring

At last the terrible weather and 'flu have abated and we've had a few decent days which, along with light for my bike ride to and from work, always raises my spirits!

I've finally completed the Verdura-inspired cuffs…

End of Year

Fashion:Victim - In Memoriam ALMcQ - 91a

Today was the last full day in the workshop before I shut for just over two weeks. I'll be in for the morning tomorrow, the workshop festive breakfast, the "Secret Santa" and then heading off to…

Christmas Rush...

Fashion:Victim - In Memoriam ALMcQ - WIP - 66

Another two-week hiatus between posts and it is only because I've been too busy to be able to find a moment to write things down. So much has happened, from being asked if I were "eligible" for inclusion in a list of "eligible bachelors" - my non-bachelor…

Foxtrot Pour Maria: Chanel Se Rencontrent Lang

Foxtrot Pour Maria: Chanel Se Rencontrent Lang - 31

I've been in the workshop for two whole days now, finishing up my "sautoir/parure" which imagines the jewellery which Chanel (probably with the help of Fulco Verdura) would have…

Tank Bracelets, Revisited

"Tank" Bracelets - WIP - 1

I was so excited about the "Tank" bracelet that I made in a minimal style last week that I have started to make three more, two in the ultra-minimal style of the first, using only silver and one large…

WHAT? The Justified Sinner goes MINIMAL?

Surely some joke?

Well, not really... I have to confess to having created something so minimal it surprised even me when it was finished:…

"Twisted" - A pendant for Annie Ross

Twisted: For Annie Ross - 5

Continuing with my resolution to clear the workshop of unfinished projects, I finally completed my piece "Twisted: For Annie Ross" today.

Made from a piece of cast-iron which I found on a bit of derelict…

End Of An Era

Waa!

My wonderful, indispensible, reliable, cheerful, friendly, unflappable workshop technician, Fiona, is leaving on Thursday. She's found a better-paid job with more promotional prospects and she'll be superb. The students will all miss her and they arranged a lunch for her today, which was great fun.…

Back To Normality

The crazy Easter Holiday is over, back from Istanbul, Brighton and the Bowie exhibition at the V&A - quite wonderful, well worth seeing if you are a Bowie fan, probably best avoided if you are not - and back into the workshop. I've been there for a week now, but it has been so hectic that it feels like I've never been away.

My first morning back, I had agreed to help the Physical Education department to train their new personal trainers, so I was sweating buckets on a…

The Black Prince

Things have been incredibly busy at work, setting up the new students, returning all the Diamond Jubilee work to the makers, making some new pieces, preparing for the "ENOUGH: Violence" show at SCC next August as well as helping a friend of mine - Wing Mun Devenney - write her new book, a technical manual on soldering.

One of the aspects of my practice which I've not really thought about properly and which I don't document…
