2Roses Monday’s Child - A Weekly Creative Shot in the Arm

Asagi Maeda - A Passionate Narrative of City Life

Asagi Maeda sculpts minute details of a big city life. Bracelets erupt with skylines of tall buildings, alongside docks, and parks. Many of Maeda’s pieces are populated with golden figures performing daily tasks, playing music, commuting or simply “people watching.” The work…

Spring At Last

City Gate

Since my last post, spring can definitely be said to have arrived and the Easter break saw sunshine all day and every day except the last. It is great to be seeing the sky still slightly light at 9pm and to feel the warmth in the…

Handmade by Machine

People familiar with my work may be surprised to learn that I use CAD (Rhino, primarily) as a design tool and that quite often, elements of my work are made using CAM processes, such as 3D milling of wax which is then cast in precious metals. My own approach to these technologies is not unique and while I don’t use them as a primary method of production, there are many makers who do – Janet Huddie,…

Hull In A Handcart

Well, not quite, but I did have to travel on a bus - which is nearly a handcart - the trains being cancelled due to a landslip.

Hull is an odd place. For the place in the UK with the highest rates of unemployment and some of the lowest property prices, it feels like a prosperous city. It is clean, it is busy, there are plenty of galleries and cafés. Adding to the oddness is the fact that it is in Yorkshire but while the buildings are completely as you would expect in that great county…

Latest completed commission

This project was my most recent custom order.  The client wanted me to make the ring for her using the little diamonds that she had inherited from her relative in old jewelry, so there was sentimental attachment to them.  It's a bold and beautiful statement and she loved the finished piece!…

Shape Series continues...

One of the newest pieces in the Shape Series is this brooch - the speckled pattern over the textured metal works well, I think.  Would like to find a venue to show these.

Hallowe'en!

Time for spooky things, so I finished my second Spoon Skull Pendant with Antlers today:

Second Spoon Skull Pendant With Antlers - 2

The chain is made from silver and chunks of the EPNS cutlery which I've butchered to make other spoon skull things. I really like the fake hallmarks on these and two of them feature on the sides of the chain.…

DYI Tool: Bail Drying Rack for Metal Clay

One of my other "hats" is being the video editor at Metal Clay Artist Magazine but I've been a little lackadaisical with producing videos for our online library, so,  I'm going to try for two birds with one stone. For my last process installment of the month, and a much over due MCAM video, I thought I would introduce another one of my favorite homemade metal clay tools, a bail drying rack.…

PMC Sterling Silver Metal Clay (4PAM_6)

Original silver metal clay, 99.9% pure fine silver, just doesn't have the density or strength to survive as fine piercing work in the context of everyday wear and tear...  at least not in my opinion. Last December Mitsubishi Materials released the much anticipated PMC Sterling Silver Clay, to the excitement of the metal clay community. I decided to put this new material to the test by creating a pretty traditional ring you most often see casted, the pierced knot work Claddagh. The main…

Earrings to Shut My Mother-In-Law Up

"Why don't you make nice jewelry that normal people can wear?" My mother-in-law is generally a sweet person, but our jewelry seriously disrupts the balance of her universe. We don't have the heart to let her

know that we actually find this amusing. Instead we made these, as a sort of offering/sacrifice. Unfortunately, we did not anticipate the law of unintended consequences, as this gesture simply reinforced her…
