Tip of the Month: Slaying the Myth Monsters

Source: CERF+ Studio Protector

Myths may lie dormant on Monster Island, but when disaster rears its ugly head, they will come down on you like Godzilla’s foot on Tokyo! Knowledge is power and can help you keep your monster under control.

Myth: My studio is…

Caught in the time warp of Art Versus Craft

We participate in a creative exercise related to EtsyMetal, a group of metalsmiths organized around Etsy. The exercise is called "Blog Carnival". Each month a topic is chosen and a variety of members from this international group each provide their individual perspectives on the subject. We thought (mistakenly) that we had scraped the subject of Art Versus Craft off our shoes for good. Thanks to Blog Carnival we have stepped in it again. It appears that it is the topic that will not…

Secrets and Surprises

It wasn't all work in Pittsburgh and in between teaching the workshops, I got a chance to socialise a bit too. Quite apart from my non-metalsmithing friends, Elizabeth Avery and Kirk Savage and their wonderfully odd family, I also managed to see Lizzy DaVita and hooked up with Glen Gardner for an evening of dinner, his workshop and an exhibition.…

Vanilla Ink Revisited

Some readers might remember that in February of this year, I spent an evening in Dundee for the launch of Kate Pickering's fantastic project, Vanilla Ink, a shop, a community, a support network, a workshop. Today was the first day of the workshop project going live, the first intake of real graduates into the year-long mentor-supported world of…

The Crafts Report, May 2012

I have been a long subscriber to The Crafts Report Magazine.  When I first started out as an "Art Fair" artist it was a great place to find good shows and learn how to apply, get a grip on what it means to wholesale or consign…

Bench Mess

I've been working intently on a couple of projects for the last few days. As I sit at my bench, late on a Sunday evening,my perspective changes from the very focused 3 x 3 inch window of my optivisors to the full scope of my bench. CARAMBA! What happened!?

2Roses blows

We recently had an opportunity to do some glass blowing with master glass artist Stephen Woodruff. We love adding skills to our repertoire. Corliss is making a drinking glass here. That glass on the end of the tube is cherry red molten hot. And yes, a glass studio is only slightly less hotter than hell, particularly in Southern California in July. But glass blowing is more fun than a barrel of monkeys...in hell.

All…

New Life, New Blog

Now that I am a full time artist and am not in school I have decided to post my research, experiences and goings on in relation to my art, design, photography, jewellery etc on here, for you the people. I have always enjoyed researching but found it a nuisance to organize my research in a way that teachers, professors, and academics in general could follow my thought process. Now that I am 'free' I am finding myself wanting to record my research in a way that the public…you….can enjoy it. So if… Continue

Tips for Enjoying an Art Studio Tour

Fall is the season of artists' Studio Tours. It gives each artist an opportunity to show his/her artistic productivity for the first three quarters of the year. (Yes, some artists do have quarterly action plans!) This is your opportunity to see them in their own creative environment where "the action" happens. Studio Tours are a special event for both the artists and their visitors!

There are a few things you, as a potential customer, need to know before starting out. Here's my… Continue
