Weird tools that do the trick

I was sitting at my workbench working away when all of a sudden I needed a special "tool', something to do the job just right and I ended up with...... (drumroll please:) a toothpick. Now, if you know me, you know that I am "tool lady" here, I have a shop full of really usefull saws, pliers, files and so forth, tools designed and made for my profession and I cherish them all, but sometimes, I just need a weird little thingimajiggi to do the job right. Best advice I (n)ever got

Ok, so I guess the title really speaks for itself but here we go regardless:

What was the best advice someone in your field ever gave to you when you were new and young ? What advice SHOULD someone have given you early on ("if only they had told me that one before...") and finally: What advice could you give now to someone in your field who is starting out fresh ?

This is going to be interesting and I will start with my own "good advice" here to break the ice: My advice to… Continue

Real World vs. Art/Craft World

How do universities/art schools/ prepare their students for the so called real world ? Is that aspect even important ? What exactly is the focus of these schools and what value does their curriculum/teachings have in a society enamored with modern technology and a throw-away-mentality. Is "art" and "craft" merely a quaint, snobistic obsession of a few people who know a lot in their field ?

Influences / Inspirations to Do Creative Work

We all know that working creatively is not like a regular a 9-5 job with an on/off switch. Therefore, I am interested to hear about what you draw from for inspiration. What outside influences (if any) do you allow yourself, is your workspace set up in a specific way that has proven to be helpful for flow of thought/work. Also: What is a hindrance to your creativity ?

"Poor Jewelry"

I recently read a very interesting article on http://www.designboom.com/contemporary/poorjewelry_1.html about a supposedly "new" crop of jewelry, they called it "poor jewelry", meaning that it was made from non-traditional materials, such as paper, glass, plastics, fiber and so on. I do not really see what is so NEW about this, these materials have been around forever and have been used in jewelry since the stoneage (well, not quite, but you know what I am getting at) - but apparently the… Continue

Low-Residency MFA - Flexibility and Community

The Low-Residency MFA Program at PAFA (to begin in Summer of 2015) is the ideal program for students who desire the community, support and rigor of a traditional MFA, but are seeking a more flexible structure to fit their lives and schedules.  Similar to PAFA’s traditional MFA, the Low-Residency program focuses on independent studio work and is interdisciplinary in nature, welcoming a wide range of approaches to art making.PAFA’s curriculum is focused to help students develop their work…See More
