Weird tools that do the trick

I was sitting at my workbench working away when all of a sudden I needed a special "tool', something to do the job just right and I ended up with...... (drumroll please:) a toothpick. Real World vs. Art/Craft World

How do universities/art schools/ prepare their students for the so called real world ? Is that aspect even important ? What exactly is the focus of these schools and what value does their curriculum/teachings have in a society enamored with modern technology and a throw-away-mentality. Is "art" and "craft" merely a quaint, snobistic obsession of a few people who know a lot in their field ?

Influences / Inspirations to Do Creative Work

We all know that working creatively is not like a regular a 9-5 job with an on/off switch. Therefore, I am interested to hear about what you draw from for inspiration. What outside influences (if any) do you allow yourself, is your workspace set up in a specific way that has proven to be helpful for flow of thought/work. Also: What is a hindrance to your creativity ?

"Poor Jewelry"

I recently read a very interesting article on http://www.designboom.com/contemporary/poorjewelry_1.html about a supposedly "new" crop of jewelry, they called it "poor jewelry", meaning that it was made from non-traditional materials, such as paper, glass, plastics, fiber and so on. A modern metalsmith/metal artist can be found working in traditional metals as well as in nontraditional materials. The designs can range from the classic to the extravagant, and the techniques can either be centuries old or decidedly current.

The wide range of expression preferences, design options, materials, and processes has lead within our field to unfavorable misconceptions, misunderstandings and in some cases even outright disdain between artists. Can the metal and jewelry field overcome its division and send out a much-needed signal?

We appreciate and respect our historical past and acknowledge that current materials have a rightful place in jewelry/object making!
