Hello crafthaus-ers.  I wanted to let you all know that I have been hard at work designing, printing and shipping new craft oriented shirts.  It all started a number of years ago when I saw Loring Taoka, a fellow crafthauser and metalsmith at a SNAG conference wearing an incredible metal-centric shirt.  I thought it was great and in the do-it-yourself fashion I am now making my own.

A little back story:

For the last four years I have been working hard on a series of metals handouts. I actually compiled enough handouts  to make a small book.  After shopping it around I realized quickly that the market was flooded.  There are thousands of great how-to books that have great drawings, and wonderful full color photographs.  Perfect little encyclopedic sets of metal wisdom.  There was only one problem.  Whenever I would teach a class or a workshop I would pull out all of these books and there was ALWAYS something missing.  It drove me bananas!  Between step three and step four they left out about a dozen things!  I wasted so much time scanning pages, book by book trying to find a photo or a drawing of the elusive:  "Which direction do you brush!?"  "What temperature should it be!?"  "Why is that important!?"  "Why is that tool that shape!?"  Eventually pulling out all of my hair I gave up and decided to just make my own set of instructions/handouts.

Conjuring up my inner nerd, I sat down in front of my computer and spent hours modeling 3D tools in Rhino (CAD software).  Night after night, I would toil away making the perfect little flexshaft or the perfect third hand. for some reason this seemed way more productive then flipping through book after book.  I made exactly what I needed. Eventually I compiled a library of virtual metals tools.  Now whenever I need to make a handout where I need to show the face of the planishing hammer I just import the planishing hammer 3D file, rotate it in 3D space and place it at the perfect angle.  Done.  My perfect little handout.

The Shirts:

The shirts are actually a by-product of these handouts. The 3D virtual tools became silhouettes.  The tool is vectorized and imported into Adobe illustrator for printing.

For the design, I gang up some tools and arrange them to produce a full bleed print that covers the whole front side of the shirt.

I am really excited about these shirts.  It has been something I have wanted to do for a very long time.

We are hard at work making shirts for every craft discipline.  As well as other craft type items.

We will also be selling printed canvas by the yard and possibly aprons.

Check the web store soon for updates.

About the actual shirts and printing process

This is a polyester American apparel shirt. It is a tad thin as American apparel shirts tend to be. Do not let that fool you this is still a great shirt. It comes in multiple sizes and colors.  These are single sided full bleed shirts so there may be some irregularities near the armpits. These are all custom one off prints.

The shirts are made using a sublimation printing process.  This is different than screen printing and will not crack, peel or flake off. Sublimated shirts leave a permanent, vivid image with a soft-to-the-hand feel.

These American Apparel tees are made with high-quality, 100% spun polyester and deliver the look and feel of organic cotton with the wickability of poly-performance fibers; providing a great fit with a soft feel.

These shirts are 100% made in the USA.

Right now we are only shipping to the USA but hopefully expanding to Canada soon and then on to Europe.

I got mine, and I love it! (although I may cut the neckline into V but that's just me!)

I think your rendering of the saw was fabulous. The shirts are so cute.  I hope you'll be selling these at the SNAG Conference.

I thinking chic with a little red tank showing below the bottom edge with the black and white T-shirt. Or wonder if the green matches my new green shoes.
