Nerikomi (often referred to as "neriage") is a decorative process established in Japan that involves stacking colored clays and then slicing through the cross section to reveal a pattern, which can then be used as an applied decoration.Dorothy Feibleman’s Nerikomi work is so incredibly well designed and expertly crafted. She’s been oohed and aahed on Facebook before but we felt that her work deserved a closer look. In addition to the gorgeous finished work of Dorothy Feibleman, we’ve included some progress shots to show how working with colored ceramic clay so closely parallels the techniques used with polymer clay. Note especially the “pre-skinner blend” type block (by ceramicist Chris Campbell) showing the preliminary steps for doing a series of graduated shades of charcoal and brown. There’s also an image of Feibleman’s prepared “canes” in earth tones.
