Rogan Brown - Paper as a Physical and Spiritual Discipline
The hand and laser cut paper sculptures of Rogan Brown will spellbind you, hypnotize you, make you gasp and sometimes arouse your baser instincts. On the surface, his works resemble delicate flower-like organisms or exotic blooms from a petri dish. But as you observe more closely, some of them begin to resemble organs of reproduction. We find Brown’s work to be exquisitely conceived (no pun intended) and executed. He elevates humble paper and explores the use of a single color in design, form, scale and composition.
Just a small bit of insight about the artist - Brown was inspired to create these pieces after learning that in the 18th century young ladies were forbidden from looking at books with botanical illustrations because the explicit sexuality of the plants reproductive organs was seen as pornographic. Way to go, Rogan Brown!
