"Maker Moxie" The Impact of the Craft School Experience Craft schools provide experiences that are thought-provoking, inspiring, and often transformative. This exhibition highlights those personal skilled gained, inspirations, achievements and stories through text and objects. We embrace the stories and work by people who have studied at one or more of these schools; the outcome of their inspiration and the narratives that go along with their experiences. How has an immersion learning experience changed you? How did it affect your artistic practice? JURORS Lindsay Ketterer Gates is a studio artist working out of Milford, PA. Her work is in the permanent collection of the American Embassy in the Republic of Djibouti, The Museum of Art and Design in NYC, Yale University Art Gallery as well as other international collections. She is on the Board of Directors of the National Basketry Organization and her work has been featured on the cover of Metalsmith Magazine and on the pages of American Craft Magazine,FiberArts, Fiber Art Now, Surface Design Journal, and Shuttle, Spindle and Dyepot Magazine, FIBERARTS Design Book 7, 500 Baskets, etc.. Lindsay has both a degree in Fine Arts and a degree in Arts Administration and divides her time between her studio and Peters Valley School of Craft, where she is currently Development Director. http://www.LindsayKGates.com Nick DeFord is an artist, educator, and arts administrator who resides in Knoxville, TN. He received his MFA from Arizona State University, and a MS and BFA from the University of Tennessee. He exhibits nationally, with recent exhibitions at the University of Mississippi, Vanderbilt University, Lindenwood University and the William King Museum in Virginia. He has had artwork or writing published in Surface Design Journal, Elephant Magazine, Hayden Ferry Review, and Willow Springs. He has upcoming exhibitions and lectures at Coastal Carolina University and Eastern Carolina University. Currently, Nick is the Program Director at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Tennessee. http://www.nickdeford.com Ellie Richards lives and works in Penland, NC as the Wood Studio Coordinator at Penland School of Crafts. She comes to Penland en route from a series of artist residency programs at the Anderson Ranch Arts Center, Peters Valley School of Craft, the Appalachian Center for Craft, and the Vermont Studio Center. Prior to this she received an MFA from Arizona State University with a focus on wood sculpture. She has exhibited her work, both furniture and sculpture, in recent exhibitions at Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, The Foundry Art Centre, and a solo display at the Nashville International Airport. Most recently she was a grant recipient for the Sculpture on Campus program at the University of West Georgia where she worked collaboratively with students to complete a large scale totem project. http://www.ellie-richards.com/ Brienne Rosner has been Manager of both the Retail Gallery and Sally D. Francisco Exhibition Gallery at Peters Valley School of Craft for over 6 years. She received a BFA in Painting from Boston University, and through her own ‘Craft School Experience’ Brienne’s work has evolved into a marriage of image and object, incorporating a variety of materials from thread and metal to detachable jewelry. She has exhibited her work nationally, including a solo show at Cedar Crest College and a two-person exhibition at Allens Lane Art Center in Philadelphia. Her work is in collections such as the Boston Public Library and a permanent installation at the Metcalf Science Center of Boston University. Brienne resides and maintains her studio in East Stroudsburg, PA. http://www.briennerosner.com CALENDAR February 15, 2016: Entry Deadline March 1, 2016: Notification will be sent via email March 11, 2016: Work is due at Peters Valley School of Craft March 26, 2016: Exhibition opens with a Reception from 5pm-7pm May 15, 2016: Exhibition closes. Unsold works will be shipped or can be picked up after this date. Please review this prospectus for details. ELIGIBILITY Work must be original and created by the applicant. Open to 2- and 3-dimensional work (including but not limited to: painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, collage, paper, encaustic, ceramic, wood, metal, jewelry, glass, textiles, fiber art, mixed media, functional or sculptural). Entry in this exhibit establishes an agreement on the part of the applicant to all conditions listed in this prospectus. Open to artists residing and working in the United States who attended at least one of the following Craft Schools: Arrowmont, Haystack, Penland, Peters Valley, Pilchuck. Please keep in mind that exhibition space is limited; however, work that cannot be accommodated in the physical exhibition may still be considered for the online exhibition and printed catalog. ENTRY FEE There is a $25 application fee for two entries, non-refundable. Applicants may submit up to three additional entries for $10 each. Proceeds from this fee support Peters Valley’s education programs. SHIPPING Artist assumes shipping costs to Peters Valley School of Craft (PVSC). Artist assumes shipping costs for the return of unsold work from PVSC. INSURANCE Insurance is provided by PVSC for the wholesale value of the object while it is our possession up to $5,000. Artists shall provide insurance coverage for work while in transit to and from PVSC. PVSC is not responsible for work until it is actually received & consigned. Hand delivered work is insured only while on PVSC property. PVSC is not responsible for the return packing, shipping or value of artwork which requires special needs unless prior arrangements have been made between Artist and PVSC, noted in writing and signed by both parties. Special needs for purposes of this paragraph shall include, but will not be limited to, oversized objects which cannot be shipped via United Parcel Service or the United States Postal Service, weights in excess of 100 pounds and/or perishable items of any manner associated with the artwork. SALES A 40% commission on the retail selling price established by the Artist shall be retained by Peters Valley School of Craft. Any membership, collector or other discount granted by PVSC shall be charged against PVSC’s commission. Work does not need to be for sale. For works submitted that are not for sale, put NFS along with an insurance value where prompted to provide the price. PUBLICITY PVSC assumes the cost of publicity. Such publicity, including selection of media and photographs, will be made at the discretion of the Executive Director of PVSC. Publicity may include: mailing and distribution of any show announcements, press releases to the media, gallery interpretive displays or other didactic material associated with the exhibition, advertisements in newspapers and other publications if any are warranted. Additionally, a catalog will be produced for the exhibition. Copies will be available for purchase. PHOTO IMAGERY & STATEMENT The Artist grants permission to use submitted images and statement as well as any images of your work created by PVSC for publication and promotional purposes regardless of whether they will appear in the physical exhibition, including any documentary products produced and made available for sale. PVSC shall have the right to publish any such photographs and statements furnished by the artist with no payment to the artist or the photographer who produced the image. Artists must secure publication permission from the photographer if copyrighted; and provide the same to PVSC.
