PARTICIPATORY SPORT FOR CRAFT ARTISTS
Greetings people of the internets, most especially my fellow crafthaus members! The time has come [the walrus said] to begin/expand my web presence. An official website is in the works and I am going to be joining a few different social networks in the near future to keep you aware of my shenanigans.
My goal with this blog will be to lend some accountability to my newfound self-employment. By sharing with you, I can keep myself on task. And, hopefully, get some great feedback and exposure at the same time.
Today I’d like to share with you an opportunity that has arisen for me that I am very excited about. Back in July, I had my very first runway show—it was awesome! It was part of a monthly event sponsored by a nonprofit organization called RAW:natural born artists. I posted some pictures on my crafthaus (http://crafthaus.ning.com/profile/JoeChurchman) and facebook (http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.672045503653.2163372.39206118) profiles as soon as I got them, I definitely suggest you take a look.
Well, it turns out that there was more to the story than just an awesome night of showing my work. Every year, this organization has a rewards program with prizes. The ultimate prize for visual artists (they host a variety of media) is a show at Mann’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, CA and if the industry professionals determine I’m the best visual artist there I get lots of media exposure and a gallery spot in an LA artwalk.
Of course, right now that’s just a really awesome dream the selection process for the organization is in its first step: online voting. Between now and Oct. 15th people can log on to rawartists.org and vote for one person per category per day. The winners of the online voting portion get another show in their home city.
What can you do to help? Please, go to http://www.rawartists.org/view-artists/userprofile/jchurchmandesign every day and click the vote button. Apparently you have to register first, but it’s really easy. Also, tell your friends and anyone else who might help out a young artist.
More to come next week! Thank you!!
