Position Description

Performs skilled mechanical and/or analytical duties in the coordination and completion of projects. Work is performed under general guidelines using established procedures and evaluated on results obtained. May supervise subordinate employees.

Major/Essential Functions

Supervise the use of shop equipment by faculty and students and enforces safety policies and procedures. Instructs and certifies faculty, staff, students in proper use of shop equipment and tools. Assists faculty and students with solving technical design problems. Supervise the circulation of hand tools and supervises use of all shop equipment.


Maintains, rebuilds or replaces shop equipment as needed. Orders supplies used in woodshop and maintains shop inventory. Supervises and trains assistants in use of shop equipment and procedures.


Conducts class orientation sessions for student users (equipment, tools and safety orientation sessions). Keeps shop and equipment clean. Performs maintenance, repair and construction as needed(requests by department chairperson, faculty and staff).


Thorough knowledge of art processes and advanced technical skills in woodworking, metal and structural fabrication. Thorough knowledge of safety policies and procedures according to standard trade practices. Ability to perform skilled work required in operation of woodshop and related 3-D areas in department (3-D design, ceramics, metalsmithing and jewelry design, sculpture).


Ability to oversee technical usage and management of the woodshop; to perform work without supervision according to standard trade practices; to train and supervise student employee(s); to establish and enforce shop policies and procedures.


Leadership ability to initiate, research, plan and develop woodshop facility. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with multi-discipline faculty and students, gallery director and campus-wide maintenance and health/safety personnel.


Part-time woodshop support during evenings and other scheduled times.

Occasional Duties

Other duties as assigned by supervisor/department chairperson.

Qualifications

High school or equivalent and four years experience. Additional job related education may substitute for required experience on a year for year basis.


This is a Security Sensitive Level I Position: Applicants for this position will be subject to a police records check and may be required to be fingerprinted.

Preferred Qualifications

MFA degree in Studio Art with advanced skills in woodworking, metal, and structural fabrication.
• Thorough knowledge of the equipment, tools, safety practices of the trade.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Minimum BFA relevant art background in 3-D technical processes with 2 years shop maintenance experience.
• Individual must have broad knowledge of art facilities and technical process in addition to shop maintenance experience, related repair and construction capability, along with student supervisory ability.
