JoAnne Russo - basketry of the highest order

Recently at the IPCA’s Synergy4 event, Kathleen Nowak Tucci gave a compelling presentation about elevating low materials to art status. The work of basket artist JoAnne Russo brought back many of the points Kathleen made during her general session. JoAnne Russo very effectively utilizes low materials and stretches the envelope with them. She uses sewing notions, and zippers, along with other natural and found materials for her baskets. To call them baskets, though, is really inaccurate, as they are so very sculptural - with thoughtful repetition and movement predominating her overall design.
