New: NCECA/crafthaus Conference Scholarship 2012

The newly created NCECA/crafthaus scholarship 2012 is awarded in February 2012 to a dual crafthaus/NCECA member and is intended to enable attendance during the On the Edge: NCECA Conference 2012, March 28-31 in Seattle, WA.

Through this sponsored scholarship NCECA hopes to encourage maker-driven discussion of critical issues, new works and trends in ceramic art and education.

Eligibility: Application for the scholarship is open to current, enrolled crafthaus and NCECA members (must be current members of both organizations) regardless of location or background.

Juror:

Sam Chung, Assistant Professor - Ceramics, School of Art, Herberger Institute for Design, Arizona State University.  NCECA Board of Directors (Director at Large 2011-2014)

Sam Chung received his MFA from Arizona State University (1997) and his B.A. degree from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota (1992). In between undergrad and grad school, he worked as a special post-bac student at the University of Minnesota. He taught at Northern Michigan University from 1998-2007 and is now teaching at Arizona State University, Tempe. Exhibitions: AKAR, Cervini Haas, The Clay Studio, Lill Street Art Center, Red Lodge Clay Center, Schaller Gallery, Dubuque Museum of Fine Art, Sherry Leedy, Santa Fe Clay, Lacoste, Taipei County Yingge Museum, Incheon World Ceramic Center. Collections: Crocker Art Museum, Incheon World Ceramic Center (Korea), Guldagergaard (Denmark), Shepparton Art Gallery (Australia), University of Arkansas, Arizona State University Ceramics Research Center. Residencies: Anderson Ranch Arts Center, Watershed, Guldagergaard (Denmark), The Pottery Workshop (China). Publications: Contemporary Ceramics (Susan Peterson), The Art of Contemporary American Pottery (Kevin Hluch), The Complete Guide to High Fire Glazes (John Britt), 500 Vases (Lark) and Masters of Porcelain (Lark). In addition, Sam has presented numerous lectures and workshops both nationally and internationally.

Judging Criteria:
Sam Chung will select one scholarship recipient based on a review of images posted on the applicants’ crafthaus pages and brief responses to a short questionnaire (see application form for details).



Scholarship Details:


• Complimentary pass to the 46th Annual NCECA Conference taking place in Seattle, WA from March 28-31, 2012.
• Push Play catalog.
• Shuttle tour ticket, enabling the scholar to get to the conference exhibitions.
• One-year additional NCECA membership once the current membership expires.
• One-year additional crafthaus membership once the current membership expires.
• Prominent blogspace on crafthaus for one year. NCECA provides reciprocal blogspace on an NCECA website.
• NCECA will work with the winning candidate to include him/her in events and meetings with NCECA, staff board and conference presenters.

Note: The winner of the scholarship will be responsible for all travel, meal and lodging expenses associated with his/her participation in the conference.


Entry Deadline and Important Dates:
Applications must be completed and submitted February 3, 2012! Only electronic entries (e-mail) are permitted. Winner will be announced early February 2012.
