Postdoctoral Fellowship in Modern Craft at the Crafts Study Centre

Postdoctoral Fellowship in Modern Craft

Crafts Study Centre

University for the Creative Arts

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

Introduction

The Trustees of the Crafts Study Centre wish to make available a post doctoral Fellowship in Modern Crafts to be located at the Crafts Study Centre, University for the Creative Arts, Farnham, Surrey, England.

It is intended that the research will align the interests of the researcher with the collections of the Crafts Study Centre. Further information on these collections is available at www.csc.ucreative.ac.uk and via the website of the Visual Arts Data Service www.vads.ac.uk. The outcome of the period of research should be defined in the application, and it could include, for example: the completion of a research project already in hand; an extended essay published in a peer-review journal or other appropriate publication; a lecture and web-based publication facilitated by the Crafts Study Centre; an exhibition essay or catalogue.

The Fellow will also make a contribution to the academic life of the University, for example by contributing to the teaching (via a seminar or lecture, for example) of the University’s PhD cohort or by a presentation to the University’s Annual Research Conference. These engagements will be agreed at the beginning of the Fellowship.

The research should make a substantive contribution to the study of craft history based on original research into a specific archive or group of objects held by the Centre. The outcome should be of particular relevance to a Higher Education Institution audience and programme. The Crafts Study Centre must be fully acknowledged in any public outcome of the research.

Support for the Fellowship

The Fellow will report to the Director of the Crafts Study Centre, Professor Simon Olding, and a ‘hot desk’ will be provided over the course of the project in the Centre. Access to the collections will be managed by the Collections Manager, Jean Vacher. The Chair of the Crafts Study Centre, Dr Glenn Adamson will act as Expert Mentor. It is anticipated that one day a week would be spent at the V & A Museum to make use of the National Art Library and the Research Department resources there. The Fellow will be expected to work at the Centre for around two days per week.

The progress of the Fellow will be monitored by the Chair and the Director of the Crafts Study Centre. In the case of a significant underperformance against an agreed work programme and milestone reports, the Trustees will reserve the right to cancel the Fellowship and not release the final payment.

Timetable

It is anticipated that the project will have a minimum length of six months depending on the nature of the research and the project outcome. The anticipated length and timing of the project should be described in the application. The Director of the Crafts Study Centre and the Collections Manager will be available from 200 to 430pm on Friday 8 June 2012 at the Crafts Study Centre to answer specific questions relating to the scope and availability for research of the Centre’s collections

Fee

The Fellowship is offered on the basis of a fixed fee of £10,000.00 to cover all associated costs including for example travel and subsistence. The Fellow will be engaged by the Trustees of the Crafts Study Centre and will be required to report to Trustees on the progress and completion of the research project. The fee will be paid in two equal instalments: at the start of the project and at its conclusion.

How to apply

An application will be by covering letter and a detailed proposal outlining the area of research (making special reference to the collections of the Crafts Study Centre that will form the basis of the study) and the nature of the proposed research and public outcomes.

The application should be sent to the Director of the Crafts Study Centre (solding@ucreative.ac.uk) by noon on Friday 22 June 2012. The decision of the Crafts Study Centre selection panel (Chair, Dr Glenn Adamson; Alison Britton, Professor Simon Olding, Jean Vacher) will be announced on Friday 29 June by e mail to all applicants. The panel may seek to interview applicants.

Applicants will be sent a complimentary copy of Essays for the opening of the Crafts Study Centre which acts as a preliminary guide to the scope and content of the collections.

The Fellowship is open to all postdoctoral academics in the UK and abroad. The successful applicant will be required to make all necessary arrangements to facilitate the research and the requirement to be present at the Centre for the duration of the research.

"Hi John. I love your flute. I worked at a job for 23 years making keys and the metal parts for contrabassoons. Unfortunately, there was no creativity involved. The upside is that I learned a huge amount about working with metal and making tools."

"It is a good article. It's a bit disappointing that the 3 artists they interview are men when it was so obvious that 90% of the Trunk Show exhibitors were women. I'd like to do a blog or two on the influence of women in the arts and how it…"

"Hi Rebecca. I have had probably a 50% success rate entering juried exhibitions, which I think is actually pretty good. I don't do shows where you go and peddle your wares from a booth. The exhibitions I've been in are held in art museums…"
